About the role

About the role

As a Senior Assessment Officer in Regulatory Standards and Support, you will assess and determine complex building licence applications in accordance with relevant legislation, policy, delegated authority and risk-based decision-making principles.

You will analyse applicants' qualifications, managerial capability and industry experience to determine their eligibility and compliance with licensing requirements. Drawing on your technical expertise and professional judgement, you will make consistent, transparent and defensible decisions on complex, high-risk and non-standard matters.

You will also provide expert advice on licensing, experience assessments and eligibility matters, mentor staff, and prepare high-quality recommendations, briefs and correspondence that support accountable regulatory decision-making.

This is a temporary, full-time opportunity until 14 January 2028. The role can be performed from a regional office, with flexible working arrangements.

About you

We are looking for an experienced professional who can confidently interpret legislation, analyse complex information and make sound, risk-based decisions.

To succeed in this role, you will demonstrate:

  • Strong assessment, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience interpreting and applying legislation, policy and regulatory frameworks.
  • Sound professional judgement in complex or non-standard matters.
  • Technical knowledge of licensing, eligibility and experience assessment processes.
  • High-level written communication skills, including preparing recommendations, briefs and reasons for decisions.
  • Strong verbal communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • The ability to provide technical guidance and support to colleagues.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accurate record-management practices.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining quality and consistency.

Experience assessing complex licence applications, including applicant experience and eligibility assessments, or working within a licensing, compliance or regulatory environment will be highly regarded. No mandatory qualifications are required.

Please refer to the attached Position Description for Key role responsibilities, Suitability requirements and Mandatory Qualifications for this role*

How to apply

To apply, please submit:

  • Your current resume; and
  • A cover letter of no more than two pages addressing the following questions.

Concise responses are encouraged. Please focus on your specific role, the actions you took and the outcomes you achieved.

Question 1

Describe a complex assessment or decision you were responsible for where the outcome was not straightforward and required you to exercise professional judgement. How did you analyse the available information, apply the relevant legislative or policy framework, consider risk, and determine a fair and consistent outcome?

Question 2

Provide an example of a complex decision you made that was challenged or questioned by a customer or stakeholder. How did you communicate the decision, prepare the supporting correspondence or reasons for the decision, and ensure the outcome was clearly explained and understood?

Question 3

Describe a time when you managed a high-volume workload with competing priorities and tight timeframes while providing guidance or support to others. How did you prioritise your work, maintain quality and consistency, and help achieve positive outcomes for your work and the broader team? What was the outcome?
