Position Summary/Job Duties:

We are looking for an enthusiastic, patient, and creative tutor to work one-on-one with our first-grade daughter. She is a bright, curious learner who would benefit from extra practice and reinforcement to build confidence and strengthen foundational reading and math skills.

Traditional worksheets are not her preferred learning style, so we are specifically seeking someone who enjoys creating hands-on, interactive, and play-based learning experiences. This is an excellent opportunity for a student interested in elementary education, child development, or literacy instruction to gain experience designing engaging learning activities for a young student.

Areas of Focus

  • Reading & Spelling: Strengthening phonics, decoding, reading fluency, and spelling skills through games, storytelling, movement, and other creative approaches.
  • Math & Place Value: Reinforcing early math concepts, with particular attention to teen numbers, place value, and number sense using manipulatives and hands-on activities.

Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • Current UW-Madison student (Elementary Education, Child Development, Educational Psychology, or related field preferred).
  • Experience working with young children in educational, childcare, camp, volunteer, or tutoring settings.
  • Ability to create engaging, age-appropriate learning experiences that build confidence and enthusiasm for learning.
  • Reliable, patient, and encouraging.

Application Instructions:

Please send a brief introduction, your major/program, relevant experience working with children, and your availability via email to mrmurphy5@wisc.edu (Michelle Murphy).
