About the role

Service Technician Team Leader | Technical Leadership | Canberra, ACT

About us

Join Acusensus as a Service Technician Team Leader and help make our roads safer

Acusensus is an organisation founded with a simple but compelling belief, that nobody should die on our roads. We build the technology that detects the Fatal Five dangerous driving behaviours (speeding, mobile phone use, seatbelt non-compliance, fatigue, and drug or alcohol impairment) and supports the enforcement programs that change them. We delivered the world’s first mobile phone detection program in New South Wales and the world’s first automated mobile device and seatbelt program in Queensland. Today we run 18 long-term contracts across 14 jurisdictions on four continents, working with governments, road authorities and police services to help reduce road trauma.

As Service Technician Team Leader, you will be the primary technical authority and frontline supervisor for our services team in Canberra. You will run daily operations, mentor technicians and make sure our roadside deployments meet rigorous safety and quality requirements.

The opportunity

You will lead the team that looks after our products and operations once a project is delivered to a client. You stay close to the technical work, from complex fault diagnostics to remote roadside fieldwork.

The role can involve high pressure, and it includes remote roadside fieldwork (including working at heights), national travel that is sometimes at short notice, and occasional early mornings, evenings or weekends.

  • Lead a team of Service Technicians to complete daily tasks and project milestones, and teach new skills and processes so the team keeps learning.
  • Prioritise incoming service requests and maintenance schedules, and improve processes by removing redundant tasks, refining checklists and filtering obsolete service reminders.
  • Act as the escalation point for complex mechanical or electrical faults that need advanced troubleshooting.
  • Oversee the fleet management system so data on trailer roadworthiness and engine health is accurate.
  • Keep team documentation and records to QA and QC requirements.
  • Lead remote roadside fieldwork, including working at heights, to strict safety protocols.
  • Manage the rollout of field equipment updates and track the execution records.

Requirements

What you’ll bring

You are a practical technician who cares about people, with the technical depth to guide a team through complex faults. You will need:

  • A Cert III in Diesel Fitting, Light or Heavy Vehicle Mechanics, Plant Mechanics or Mechanical Engineering, or about 5 years of experience in a similar technical role.
  • Proficient experience with 12V/24V DC automotive electrical systems (alternators, batteries, solar regulators and wiring looms), plus competence with trailer mechanics (bearings, brakes, hubs) and hydraulic or pneumatic systems, including masts and actuators.
  • High proficiency with hand tools, power tools and basic fabrication such as drilling, tapping and mounting hardware, and the diagnostic skills to connect a laptop to hardware, update firmware and use service ticketing systems.
  • Communication skills strong enough to talk a less experienced worker or a subcontractor through finding faults on a remote system, and a professional, friendly approach with colleagues from technicians to executives.
  • A disciplined approach to documentation, keeping records and reporting that meets QA and QC requirements, and the ability to prioritise requests under pressure.
  • Comfort with remote roadside fieldwork, including working at heights, and the ability and willingness to travel nationally.

Highly regarded

  • A working at heights ticket and a whitecard, or a willingness to obtain them.
  • A qualification in Automotive Electrical Technology.
  • A basic understanding of networking (checking IP addresses, hardware switching) or familiarity with command line interfaces (Linux or Unix). Training is provided if required.

Benefits

Why join us

  • Lead from the front. You are the primary technical authority for the services team. You receive broad strategic guidance and project priorities from your manager, with high autonomy in how you deliver them.
  • Shape how we deliver. You will improve how the team works and help shape service delivery. Your expert advice on fleet mechanical health supports management decisions.
  • Work that saves lives. The technical standards you oversee keep our roadside deployments safe and reliable, supporting enforcement programs built on one belief: nobody should die on our roads.

We build technology to make roads safer. That mission doesn’t stop when we leave for the day, it shows up every time we get behind the wheel of a vehicle to be role model drivers. An employment offer is subject to a criminal history check and a driving history check, plus any further checks needed to meet the obligations of our clients.
