About the role

Classification Title:

Postdoctoral Fellow

Classification Minimum Requirements:

Applicants must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree by June 2027. Candidates who received the doctorate after June 2023 are eligible to apply.

Job Description:

Position Description

The Hamilton School for Classical and Civic Education at the University of Florida invites applications for two Postdoctoral Fellowships in English literature, intellectual history, political theory, theology and religion, philosophy, political science, and strategic studies. Fellows will pursue ambitious research and participate in an interdisciplinary community devoted to serious inquiry into enduring questions of human nature, political order, religion, literature, philosophy, history, war, statecraft, and the ideas and institutions that have shaped Western civilization and the American experience.

The Fellowship is a two-year, residential appointment beginning August 2027. It is designed to provide an optimal context for pursuing research toward publications. Consequently, while Fellows have the option of teaching a course in their areas of expertise, teaching does not constitute a requirement for the Fellowship. Applications from scholars whose work transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries are particularly welcome.

Fellows can expect structured mentoring and job-market advising. Fellows are expected to participate in regular Fellows and Faculty Seminars as well as visiting speakers sponsored by the Hamilton School.

About the Hamilton School

The Hamilton School is a multi-disciplinary academic unit at the University of Florida, devoted to excellence teaching and research in the humanities and social sciences. Its work engages the ideas and institutions, traditions and texts that have shaped Western civilization and the American experience, while fostering open inquiry, civil discourse, and robust engagement across disciplinary boundaries. Fellows will join a rapidly growing community of scholars working in history, literature, philosophy, political thought, religion, political science, international affairs, and war, statecraft, and strategy.

Expected Salary:

Salaries begin at approximately $80,000, and include benefits, and $5,000 for research support.

Fellows are eligible for UnitedHealthcare Student Health Insurance Plan.

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree by June 2027. Candidates who received the doctorate after June 2023 are eligible to apply.

Preferred:

Special Instructions to Applicants:

A complete application must include:

  1. A cover letter
  2. A curriculum vitae
  3. A research statement of approximately 3-5 single-spaced pages describing the project to be pursued during the fellowship
  4. A writing sample of no more than 40 single-spaced pages
  5. Three names and contact information for referees who can be reached for reference letters

Successful applicants will undergo two-stages of zoom interviews. The appointment will begin in August 2027.

Appointments will be made on the basis of exceptional scholarly achievement and promise; the significance, originality, and feasibility of the proposed research; evidence of excellent research; intellectual range; and the potential to contribute to a demanding and collegial interdisciplinary community.

This position is open until filled. Review of Applications will begin immediately and continue until the position has been filled.
