About the role

Who We Are

In Melbourne, water is essential to our way of life.

As caretakers for Melbourne’s water cycle, we care for water, life and land throughout Melbourne: both its people and its biodiversity.

Each time you drink from the tap, flush a toilet, run through a backyard sprinkler, or kayak down the Yarra, we’re there. Primed and ready, quietly delivering some of the world’s cleanest water for over five million residents and wildlife that call Melbourne home, just as we have for over 130 years.

If you value making it count, diving in with curiosity, and doing what’s right, you're in the right place.

Leading Hand – Natural Resource Management. Fixed term parental leave cover until August 2027

9-day fortnight | Every second Friday off.

Are you an experienced and passionate Natural Resource Management professional who enjoys helping others build confidence, solve problems and do their best work?

We’re looking for a Leading Hand – Natural Resource Management to join a small team of four and provide hands-on leadership, coaching and guidance in the day-to-day delivery of natural resource management and project works.

This isn’t about sitting on the sidelines. You’ll work alongside the crew in this field-based role, helping plan and coordinate daily activities, allocating tasks based on individual skills and strengths, and making sure the team has the tools, support and direction they need to work safely and effectively. No two days are the same. One day you might be undertaking weed control, and revegetation works along a waterway, and the next you could be supporting environmental restoration projects across municipalities including:

  • Hume
  • Whittlesea
  • Brimbank
  • Merri-bek
  • Darebin
  • Moonee Valley

What you’ll be doing

A big part of this role is supporting people in your team to succeed. You’ll:

  • Provide day-to-day leadership, mentoring and coaching to crew members
  • Be a trusted person the team can turn to for guidance, reassurance and practical support
  • Help develop team members through on-the-job training and knowledge sharing
  • Plan and coordinate daily tasks, drawing on the experience and strengths of the crew
  • Allocate tasks and help keep the team focused on safe, quality outcomes
  • Work alongside the crew delivering natural resource management, and project works
  • Help ensure appropriate risk assessments, policies and safe work practices are followed
  • Support emergency response where required.

About you

You’ll bring experience working with and leading crews within Natural Resource Management, land management, maintenance or a similar field environment.

More importantly, you’ll be someone who is passionate about the environment and who enjoys developing and engaging others to complete required outcomes. You’re approachable, calm and practical, and comfortable giving people clear direction whilst also creating an environment where they feel supported to ask questions and build their capability.

You’ll also bring strong safety awareness, sound problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, stakeholders and members of the public.

What we offer

  • Salary package of $89,069.
  • Fixed-term parental leave opportunity until August 2027, based at Brooklyn.
  • Join a close-knit team of four
  • Enjoy a 9-day compressed fortnight with every second Friday off
  • A genuine opportunity to lead, coach and develop others while remaining hands-on in the field
  • Varied work across natural resource management, maintenance and project activities

If you’re the kind of leader who people naturally turn to for advice, encouragement and practical guidance, we’d love to hear from you.
