About the role

Who We Are

UnitedMasters, Inc. is a first-of-its-kind company that lives at the intersection of culture, tech and storytelling. Through our creative solutions company, Translation, we build ideas that transcend traditional marketing to

drive business results through cultural impact. Through our music tech platform, UnitedMasters, we power the careers of independent artists through music distribution services and partnership opportunities with the world’s biggest brands. As one-company, we are building a world where cultural capital is equitably exchanged at scale by serving as the go-to source for shared gains between artists and brands.

If this description makes you feel like running through a brick wall, you’re in the right place.

The Role

Context Planning is the connective tissue between what we make and who we’re making it for. This is a team that only exists at Translation and we built it to help brands diffuse their ideas through culture by focusing on where, when and who they live through.

This role is for a leader who can translate raw insight into real influence, help brands find their voice inside the communities they are looking to engage with, and build systems that make great ideas scale. At your core, you're not just a comms planner. You’re a front row student of culture, a campaign conductor, and an idea amplifier. The Context Director is a leadership position that demands creative foresight, cultural nuance, business acumen, cross-functional collaboration, and a deep connection to what’s moving the world today.

What You’ll Do

Functional Skills

  • Cultural Research: Lead and assign cultural deep dives that inform strategy and creative development.
  • Comms Planning: Own authorship of holistic GTM plans that connect the dots creatively while translating business objectives into actionable rollouts over time and space/channels.
  • Casting & Talent Strategy: Lead authorship of casting filters that help identify talent who personify our campaign message while ensuring brand safety and creative alignment.
  • Creative World-Building: Analyze hero deliverables (e.g., film scripts) and provide cultural nuance that infuses insider fan perspective in the form Easter eggs, and additional engagement tactics that will resonate with core audience members.
  • Convergence & Collaboration: Facilitate onboarding for new hires to ensure alignment on Context’s function and value. Partner across PR, Media, and Social teams to preserve creative integrity and contextual fluency from pitch to publish.
  • Leadership & Mentorship: Serve as a core member of the business leadership team, aligning day-to-day execution with our broader One Company Vision. Mentor DRs across IC1–IC3 levels and informally coach team members outside your direct reporting line.

Who You Are

  • A systems thinker who can orchestrate brand storytelling through people, platforms, and moments.
  • A culture junkie with strong intuition and analytical rigor—you know what’s next, and why it matters.
  • A collaborator who’s equally fluent in creative, strategy, talent, and media environments.
  • A researcher at heart, with a passion for ethnography, behavioral analysis, and emerging platforms.
  • A mentor and motivator who uplifts junior talent and brings out the best in cross-functional teams.

Qualifications

  • 7–9 years experience in cultural strategy, brand planning, or creative strategy roles.
  • Proven experience leading multi-channel campaigns from insight through execution.
  • Strong writing and storytelling skills—must be comfortable presenting work to senior leaders and clients.
  • Proficiency in Keynote, Google Suite, and qualitative research tools.
  • Deep understanding of subcultures, niche internet communities, and artist ecosystems.
  • Bonus: Background or minor in a creative craft, artistic discipline, or subcultural space.

Salary Hiring Range: $120,000 - $140,000

Our salary ranges are based on paying competitively for our size and industry, and are one part of many compensation, benefits and other reward opportunities we provide (e.g. bonus, stock options, 401(k) match, etc.)

Individual pay rate decisions are based on a number of factors, including qualifications for the role, experience level, skillset, and balancing internal equity relative to peers at the company. We expect the majority of the candidates who are offered roles at our company to fall healthily throughout the range based on these factors.

The range above is for the expectations as laid out in the job description, however we are often open to a wide variety of profiles, and recognize that the person we hire may be less experienced (or more senior) than this job description as posted. If that ends up being the case, the updated salary range will be communicated with you as a candidate.

The salary range above is for the NY/CA. As a company, we have a location based strategy, which means the salary range could be lower or higher than this if the role is hired in another location.
