About the role

The QAS Indigenous Paramedic Program (the Program) provides a supported entry-level pathway into paramedicine for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are seeking to develop a career as in paramedicine. The Program creates an opportunity for participants to reach their full potential via supported education pathways that are aligned with meaningful employment prospects.

The Program is designed for individuals with a minimum Year 12 or equivalent completion or Certificate III qualification and are ready for a structured career and education pathway. The Program is moderately paced and enables Cadets to undertake a tailored academic pathway that includes vocational and tertiary level education. Participants are supported to continue through the academic milestones of the Program to reach their full potential. The QAS has partnered with a national university to deliver the higher education milestones of the Program. Cadets continue to work in the operational environment whilst undertaking their studies. To enable learning and balance work and life pressures, Cadets are supported with access to paid study leave and individual tutoring assistance where required.

Local community engagement, understanding and positive relationships are vital for Cadets to thrive as role models for their community and culture. Successful applicants can demonstrate their strong engagement and relationships with the local community through kinship, family lineage, connection to Country and involvement in community activities, local to the prescribed area.

QAS Cadets should possess the following attributes

  • Strong Community connection: demonstrated ongoing involvement in and respect for community through cultural, family and/or Community-based activities.
  • Commitment to Cultural Leadership: Ability to reflect the culture and belonging of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples within the Queensland Community, acting as a positive role model in Community.
  • Readiness for structured learning: A willingness to engage in a staged education pathway, with the resilience to balance work, study, personal and community responsibilities.
  • A genuine commitment to developing a career in paramedicine and improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and community through the provision of respectful and culturally safe healthcare.
  • Emotional Intelligence: High level of empathy, cultural sensitivity and respect for others, particularly in high pressure and challenging environments.

Applications to remain current for 12 months.
