About the role

About Anthrogen

Anthrogen is engineering post-modality biology. Today's modalities reflect historical contingencies in biological progress, not fundamental categories. We develop the AI systems that design modular biological machines and the experimental infrastructure to instantiate them. We're a small, high-density team in San Francisco building frontier AI and the biological systems to validate it, and we care most about people who move fast, go deep, and pick up whatever the problem needs.

The role

We hire for talent before titles. If you are exceptional and none of our open roles quite fit, tell us what we're missing.

You might have a research direction we should pursue, a capability we haven't built, or an unusual combination of skills that would change what we can do. You don't need to arrive with a complete job description. You do need to give us a concrete reason to think we should work together.

We're looking for the same things we look for in every hire: exceptional work, independent judgment, curiosity beyond a specialty, and a serious interest in what Anthrogen is trying to build. The absence of a matching title shouldn't keep us from meeting someone we ought to know.

What we'd like to hear

  • What would you work on here, and why does it matter for Anthrogen?
  • What have you built, discovered, or made happen that shows what you're capable of? Tell us what you personally contributed and include work we can inspect where possible.
  • What do you understand unusually well, and how might that help us do something we couldn't otherwise do?

An interesting, specific answer is more useful than a polished general cover letter. Show us the work and the thinking behind it.

Logistics

Our models can propose a new sequence quickly. Learning whether it works still depends on someone making the material correctly, running a careful experiment, and noticing when something is off. We want a research associate whose bench work we can trust and who wants to…

A molecule can work in a dish and fail in a living system for an entirely different reason. It may not reach the tissue, persist long enough, or act in the biological context we expected. We want a scientist who can distinguish those explanations and design the experiment that…

We want experimental scientists with strong biological intuition and the ability to turn an uncertain question into a decisive experiment. You'll own research on how our designed proteins and assemblies behave: how they function, how they interact, and why they fail. That means…
