About the role
Modernize business-critical applications through Unix/Linux scripting, automation, and infrastructure modernization.
The Role
Capco is looking for a Unix/Linux Scripting Specialist to support a major application modernization initiative focused on upgrading legacy Unix scripts, improving automation, and transitioning applications into modern infrastructure environments.
This is a hands-on, scripting-focused role where you'll work extensively with existing Unix/Linux scripts, troubleshooting, refactoring, and adapting them to support application migrations and modernization efforts. You'll work across Unix/Linux, Virtual Machines (VMs), OpenShift, and JBoss, ensuring scripts and application components continue to function reliably as underlying technologies evolve.
You'll collaborate closely with application, infrastructure, and technology teams to resolve compatibility issues, improve automation, and support the successful modernization of business-critical applications.
What You'll Do
- Analyze, troubleshoot, refactor, and modernize legacy Unix/Linux scripts to support application modernization and migration initiatives.
- Develop and maintain automation scripts using Bash, Shell, Python, PowerShell, and Groovy to improve operational efficiency and reduce manual processes.
- Adapt and validate existing scripts and application components as applications transition between legacy environments, virtual machines (VMs), and containerized platforms.
- Work hands-on with OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) to support application deployments, troubleshoot environment-related issues, and ensure compatibility with modernized infrastructure.
- Support applications running on JBoss, investigating script dependencies, configuration issues, and application runtime compatibility during modernization.
- Troubleshoot scripting, operating system, and application integration issues across Linux and Windows environments.
- Collaborate with development, infrastructure, and DevOps teams to ensure successful application migrations and reliable ongoing operations.
What We're Looking For
- 5–6 years of hands-on Unix/Linux experience, with a strong focus on shell scripting, automation, troubleshooting, and maintaining or modernizing legacy scripts.
- Strong proficiency in Unix/Linux shell scripting (Bash/Shell), including the ability to analyze, modify, debug, and optimize complex existing scripts.
- Hands-on experience working with Virtual Machines (VMs), including supporting applications and scripts in virtualized environments.
- Practical experience with OpenShift Container Platform (OCP), including application deployments, configuration, and troubleshooting.
- Experience working with JBoss application servers, including supporting application environments and resolving configuration or compatibility issues.
- Experience with scripting and automation tools such as Python, PowerShell, or Groovy.
- Strong Linux operating system knowledge, ideally across RHEL, CentOS, or Ubuntu.
- Experience supporting application migrations, infrastructure upgrades, or modernization initiatives involving legacy technologies.
Bonus Points For
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or other containerization technologies.
- Exposure to AWS or cloud-based infrastructure environments.
- Experience supporting Java application modernization or migrations involving legacy Java 6/8 applications.
- Familiarity with Apache Tomcat, Nginx, or HAProxy.
- Experience troubleshooting complex application dependencies, environment configurations, and script-related issues during migrations.
- Experience working in financial services or other large-scale enterprise technology environments.
