About the role

About Our School

At Mackay District Special School, we believe every learner deserves the opportunity to shine.

Located in beautiful Beaconsfield, Queensland, our dedicated Prep to Year 12 school provides specialised education for students with intellectual disabilities and additional needs, including autism, physical, visual, and hearing impairments.

Guided by our core values of Diversity, Growth, and Community, we work together to foster independence, confidence, and a love of learning in every student. Our learners are actively involved in the local community through events, excursions, and work experience programs that build skills for life.

The Opportunity

We are seeking passionate, flexible, and caring teachers to join our vibrant and professional team.

While the vacancies are advertised across Prep to Year 12, we warmly welcome applications from teachers with interests in any year level.

This is a truly rewarding opportunity to make a difference—supporting students to grow, achieve, and thrive in a nurturing and inclusive environment.

What We're Looking For

  • A strong commitment to inclusive education and differentiated teaching.
  • The ability to create engaging, individualised programs for diverse learners.
  • A caring, patient, and collaborative approach to teaching and learning.
  • Willingness to work as part of a supportive multidisciplinary team.
  • Dedication to ongoing professional growth and reflective practice.

Why Mackay District Special School

  • Dedicated small-class setting across Prep–Year 12 – This special school maintains a low student-to-teacher ratio, enabling deeply individualised learning plans for students with intellectual and additional needs, including autism, vision, hearing, and physical impairments
  • High-tech, inclusive learning environment – Teachers engage with modern adaptive technologies and assistive communication tools (including AAC devices, eye‑gaze systems, and iPads), plus access to a therapy pool for hydrotherapy and water-based interventions, supporting diverse learning styles
  • Strong community involvement and geographic diversity – Located in Beaconsfield (Mackay region), the school builds meaningful local partnerships through its active P&C, school council, and participation in work experience and community events; it serves students from across the region, including Sarina, Seaforth, and even Proserpine—drawing on a supportive network beyond its immediate catchment
