About the role

Who we are

At Picnic, we’re reinventing the way employees experience lunch at work. By partnering with top local restaurants and batching hundreds of orders, we make it easy for companies to offer high-quality, individually packed meals, without fees or tips. Our mission is to create a seamless, affordable, and joyful lunch experience that benefits both employees and employers.

About the role

As Strategy & Planning Director, you'll be the right hand to the Head of Picnic, turning a fast-moving business into a well-organized, goal-driven machine. You'll own the planning cadence, drive big projects across our General Managers, and lead the central teams that keep every market rowing in the same direction.

This is not a staff role. You'll own outcomes and a team, not just analyses, and you'll see the direct impact of your work on how Picnic grows.

What you’ll do

  • Set and review goals: Drive quarterly and annual planning across all Picnic teams. Partner with the Head of Picnic to define company-level and functional OKRs, then review them every quarter.
  • Make big projects land: Take a date and a goal and push it across every General Manager until it's done. Translate leadership decisions into clear workstreams, owners, and timelines.
  • Lead the central teams: Manage and direct Picnic's central functions, including Central Operations, restaurant integrations, and Data, along with a few individual contributors. These are experienced teams who know their work and need clear direction.
  • Own the scoreboard: Build and maintain the KPIs, leading indicators, and scorecards that tell us whether we're winning, and run the weekly and monthly business review.
  • Partner on budgeting: Work with our Strategic Finance lead on budgeting and forecasting cycles, and inform headcount and spend decisions.
  • Run special projects: Lead market sizing, operational deep dives, and growth assessments for the Head of Picnic, and prepare exec-level materials that are sharp and decision-ready.

What we’re looking for

  • 5 to 10 years of experience, including time in top-tier consulting, investment banking, or private equity. A common path is about three years at a top firm, then business school and a growing startup, or three to four years at a top firm, then an operating role.
  • A Bachelor's from a top university.
  • You've operated inside a high-growth startup, ideally most recently. You learned best practices at a larger organization, then figured things out without them.
  • You've led people or teams, and you can give experienced leads clear direction without doing their jobs for them.
  • You have a track record of owning cross-functional processes and holding teams to their commitments in a way that's collaborative, not policing.
  • You have strong command of data. You build models, pull your own data, and know when a number doesn't pass the sniff test. SQL proficiency is required.
  • You're exceptional at translating complexity into clarity, and you write and present clearly.
  • You're low ego and high agency, and you hold multiple workstreams without letting anything fall.

Why join us

  • Drive real impact: Be part of building the operational engine behind a fast-growing startup that’s redefining how work gets done.
  • Work with purpose: Join a mission-driven team focused on making the workplace experience better for thousands of people.
  • Grow with us: At Picnic, there’s room to grow—personally and professionally—as we scale and take on new challenges together.

What else you need to know

This role is based in our Los Angeles office location. As a company driven by innovation and continuous change, close collaboration is essential. We’re constantly reimagining our industry, creating new products, and refining our processes, and we do our best work together. That’s why all of our office-based teams work onsite, five days a week.

The base salary range for this role is $200,000 - $220,000 per year.

Actual compensation will be determined on an individual basis and may vary depending on experience, skills, and qualifications.

Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package. You may also be eligible for equity awards and an annual performance-based bonus.
