Location - London, Highstreet Kensington

ROLE PURPOSE

New Scientist is seeking a short-form vertical video producer with a fascination for science to join our team and champion high-quality vertical video production across our social media accounts and in-app products including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and YouTube. The role is part of a wider video expansion as we translate our world-class science journalism, expert voices and up-to-the minute science news to a growing audience of video-first consumers both on and off platform.

The short-form video producer will work closely with our Senior social media editor and our Head of Audience to develop new video formats and content strands that utilise our in-house experts, reflect our deep topic knowledge and make the most of our access to world-leading scientists. They will commission and create high quality, entertaining and informative videos daily, and own the production pipeline from ideation to publication.

KEY TASKS/OBJECTIVES

  • Produce entertaining, educational and creative vertical videos that meet New Scientist’s standards of accuracy and storytelling
  • In collaboration with our editorial team commission, write, edit and develop stories to be told as short-form vertical video
  • Direct, support and train New Scientist journalists to present to camera
  • Manage the production workflow, ensuring there is a rich stream of socially optimised content
  • Develop and pitch ideas for new video stories and formats
  • Commission motion graphics, animated videos and oversee external freelancers
  • Host and present videos as required
  • Work on wider video projects, including long-form YouTube content, podcasts and interviews as required

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrable experience of producing, filming and editing high-quality, short-form videos for a social-first audience, preferably with experience of working in a busy newsroom
  • Expert user of Adobe Premiere or equivalent video editing software
  • Experience of camera operation, lighting and green screen with an interest in learning more advanced skills
  • Some presenting, voiceover or on-camera reporting experience
  • Understanding of, and ability to leverage, audience data to inform video decisions
  • A degree or other qualification in a science, technology, engineering or maths subject is not required, but an interest in these subjects is essential

SKILLS AND BEHAVIOURS

  • Strong editorial judgement and clear understanding of video production
  • Appreciation for quality visual journalism and a passion for science and technology
  • Able to work collaboratively to build relationships across the business and externally
  • Organised, creative self-starter able to deliver content to deadline, under pressure
  • Flexible and adaptive
