About the role

Help shape the future of Queensland's transport network.

Every day, Queenslanders rely on safe, durable, and high-performing roads to connect communities, support businesses, and keep the state moving. Behind every successful infrastructure project is a team of technical specialists ensuring materials meet the highest standards.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced materials professional who enjoys combining technical expertise with leadership, problem-solving, and stakeholder engagement.

About the Role:

As a Senior Technician (Materials), you'll be at the forefront of materials testing, investigation, surveillance, auditing, and technical advisory services that support the delivery and maintenance of Queensland's transport infrastructure.

You'll work on complex and varied projects, providing expert analysis and recommendations that directly influence construction quality, asset performance, and project outcomes.

No two days are the same. One day you may be leading specialist materials investigations and interpreting test data, and the next you could be mentoring technical staff, engaging with industry stakeholders, or helping develop procedures that improve service delivery across the organisation. Your expertise will help ensure that infrastructure investments deliver safe, reliable, and long-lasting benefits for Queensland communities.

What You'll Be Doing:

Leading specialist materials testing, investigations, surveillance, and audit activities.

Managing technical projects from planning through to completion.

Providing expert advice to project teams, consultants, contractors, and other stakeholders. Interpreting technical data and preparing clear, practical recommendations.

Supporting compliance with industry standards, specifications, and accreditation requirements. Contributing to the development and continuous improvement of technical systems, procedures, and practices.

Acting as a trusted technical resource within the organisation.

Coaching, mentoring, and developing technical staff to build capability across the team.

Building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve quality project outcomes.

Championing a culture of safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement.

You bring:

Strong experience in materials testing, laboratory technology, investigations, or quality assurance. Sound technical knowledge and the ability to interpret testing results and industry standards. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical information into practical advice.

Experience managing competing priorities and delivering quality outcomes within agreed timeframes.

A proactive approach to continuous improvement and innovation.

A commitment to safety, quality, and professional excellence.

The ability to build productive relationships and positively influence others.

At Transport and Main Roads, you'll be part of a team that contributes to projects that make a real difference across Queensland.

Join us and help deliver the infrastructure that connects Queensland's communities today and into the future.

Applications to remain current for 12 months.
