About the role

At Alamar, we are passionate about enabling our customers to make scientific discoveries that translate into clinical outcomes and benefit patients. Our team is growing quickly as we develop innovative approaches to measure critical protein biomarkers from liquid samples that can enable the earliest possible detection of disease. We believe the next frontier in biology is enabled by measuring proteins at higher sensitivity in highly multiplexed assays at the push of a button, which is something only Alamar can do. As we build our team, we seek collaborative, driven, intellectually curious people committed to solving complex challenges. Our culture rewards accountability and cross functional teamwork because we believe this enables the kind of breakthrough thinking that will accelerate our mission.

The Senior Tax Manager is the Company’s in-house tax subject matter expert. The role owns the accuracy of the income tax provision, oversees federal, state, and international tax compliance, and develops tax strategies that support the Company’s growth. It is responsible for the quarterly and annual tax reporting required of a public company and for compliance with ASC 740 and SEC requirements. The position partners closely with external tax advisors, auditors, and cross-functional teams, and plays a key role in tax-related internal controls and disclosures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the quarterly and annual income tax provision under ASC 740, including the effective tax rate, deferred taxes, valuation allowance assessments, and uncertain tax positions (ASC 740-10).
  • Prepare and review tax provision workpapers, footnote disclosures, and supporting memos for internal stakeholders and external auditors.
  • Manage the relationship with external tax advisors and oversee the timely, accurate preparation of tax deliverables.
  • Oversee federal, state, and local income tax compliance, including returns, extensions, and estimated payments.
  • Manage indirect tax compliance, including sales and use tax, property tax, business licenses, and annual reports, and evaluate nexus as the business expands.
  • Oversee international tax compliance for foreign subsidiaries, including Forms 5471/8858, GILTI/Subpart F calculations, VAT/GST, and transfer pricing documentation.
  • Maintain the tax calendar and respond to notices, inquiries, and audits from tax authorities.
  • Lead tax planning initiatives, including R&D tax credit studies, Section 174/174A research expenditure treatment, Section 382 analysis of NOL and credit carryforwards, and entity structuring.
  • Advise on the tax implications of M&A, licensing arrangements, equity and debt financing, and other strategic initiatives.
  • Support tax-related disclosures on Forms 10-K and 10-Q.
  • Design, document, and maintain SOX-compliant internal controls over the tax provision and tax compliance processes.
  • Collaborate with Accounting, FP&A, Legal, HR/Payroll, Stock Admin, and Operations on tax matters, including employee equity programs, cash taxes, and the effective tax rate forecast.
  • Monitor tax legislation and regulatory developments and assess their impact on the Company.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Taxation. Master’s in Taxation or MBA preferred.
  • Certification: CPA required.
  • Experience:
  • 8+ years of progressive corporate income tax experience, including Big 4 or national firm experience and ideally 2+ years in-house. Must have demonstrated ownership of a public company’s quarterly and annual provision and experience managing outside advisors or leading a team.
  • Skills:
  • Deep knowledge of ASC 740 and U.S. federal, state, and international tax law.
  • Working knowledge of R&D tax credits, Section 174/174A, Section 382, GILTI/Subpart F, and transfer pricing.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax matters to non-tax audiences.
  • Proficiency in NetSuite, Excel, and tax provision and compliance software.

Preferred Attributes

  • Experience in the life sciences, biotech, or medical device industry.
  • Experience with international subsidiaries, intercompany transactions, and consolidations.
  • Experience supporting a newly public company, including SOX implementation over tax.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and to build tax processes from the ground up.
