About the role

Position Summary:

Join the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) and be the MBSE expert who leads, mentors, and empowers the next generation of systems modelers! UDRI offers an exceptional work environment where research excellence thrives. You'll enjoy comprehensive benefits including robust health coverage, retirement contributions, and professional development opportunities. Our commitment to work-life balance includes flexible scheduling, wellness programs, and a collaborative culture that values both innovation and personal growth. Apply to our Senior MBSE Mentor & Modeling Lead today!

We are seeking a Senior MBSE Expert to serve as the technical mentor and leader for a team of 10–20 junior modelers. This role emphasizes mentorship, oversight, and knowledge management over hands-on modeling. The successful candidate will be responsible for guiding the professional growth of junior modelers, capturing and institutionalizing best practices, and ensuring collaboration, consistency, and quality across the modeling team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day mentoring, coaching, and technical guidance to junior MBSE modelers.
  • Develop and manage individual growth plans for each modeler, ensuring career development and skill progression.
  • Capture, document, and disseminate best practices, modeling standards, and lessons learned across the team.
  • Oversee the consistency, quality, and alignment of models produced by the team with organizational objectives.
  • Facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing across a group of 10–20 modelers, including leading regular working sessions, peer reviews, and training workshops.
  • Serve as the primary point of escalation for modeling issues, ensuring technical challenges are addressed efficiently.
  • Work closely with systems engineering leadership to align team outputs with program and enterprise-level modeling strategies.
  • Advocate for continuous improvement in modeling practices, tools, and methodologies.
  • Contribute to the definition and enforcement of modeling governance processes and tool usage guidelines.
  • Establish plans for transitioning to SysML 2.0.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Engineering Management, or related technical field.
  • 10 years experience in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) using tools such as Cameo/MagicDraw, Rhapsody, Enterprise Architect, or Capella.
  • Proven track record with 5+ years experience mentoring, training, or leading junior engineers or modelers.
  • Deep understanding of SysML, UAF, DoDAF, and MBSE standards/frameworks.
  • Experience developing and implementing Government Reference Architectures (GRA’s)
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills, with the ability to manage a large team of modelers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for documenting best practices and conducting knowledge-sharing sessions.
  • Ability to balance strategic oversight with tactical support for junior modelers.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Due to the requirements of our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be a U.S. citizen.

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

  • Experience in enterprise-level MBSE adoption or transformation initiatives.
  • Background in aerospace, defense, or other complex system-of-systems environments.
  • 5 years experience integrating MBSE models with digital engineering ecosystems (simulation, digital twins, data platforms).
  • Demonstrated success in building and managing a community of practice around MBSE.
  • Experience creating a repository of best practices and example models.
  • Active Security Clearance.

Special Instructions to Applicants:

To apply please submit a cover letter addressing each minimum qualification and any applicable preferred qualifications that you meet.

Closing Statement:
