About the role

About us

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is a vital part of Queensland's justice system, representing the State in prosecuting criminal matters across courts such as the High Court of Australia, Supreme Court, District Court, and more. Our work addresses complex and sensitive legal matters, ensuring justice is upheld with professionalism and integrity.

About the role

We are offering two permanent flexible-full time positions in the Directors Chambers located in our Brisbane Office. As a Senior Legal Support Officer, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Prepare accurate and high-quality criminal court documents, including subpoenas, affidavits, and other legal documentation.
  • Maintain Appeals case files and records, including briefs of evidence, witness lists, exhibits, and other court materials.
  • Manage the disclosure of prosecution materials to defence counsel and communicate instructions from Consultant Prosecutors and Crown Prosecutors to relevant parties.
  • Support legal practitioners through the preparation of file notes, statements, and other case-related documentation.
  • Appear in court as an instructing clerk, providing support to legal practitioners during hearings.
  • Coordinate appeals listings with the Listings Unit and Court Registrars.
  • Prepare accurate sitting reports and records of court proceedings.
  • Conduct legal research using a range of legal resources and databases.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders, including courts, police, and defence counsel.

What we're looking for

We're seeking a dynamic and skilled professional who can demonstrate:

  • Intermediate understanding of legal practice, the prosecution function, the role of the courts, and the complexities of the Appeals process.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with excellent attention to detail in preparing legal and court documentation.
  • Well-developed organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and legal research skills, including the ability to interpret complex legal and legislative requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders while maintaining professionalism, confidentiality, and tact.
  • Experience engaging with victims of crime in a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive manner.
  • A strong work ethic and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, electronic document management systems, and the ability to quickly learn specialist legal systems and databases.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, ethical standards, cultural capability, and commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Ability to undertake intrastate travel as required.

Mandatory qualifications

There are no mandatory qualifications required for this role, however, possession of relevant tertiary qualifications in justice, criminology, law or a related discipline will be highly regarded.
