About the role

Wanted: Colonist QA Engineer

Working Hours: We work asynchronously and value outcomes over hours

Location: Fully Remote

Compensation: Paid in USD. Negotiable based on experience and location

About Colonist

We're building the biggest digital board game platform on the internet. Last year, our players spent 3,037 years playing 60 million games on our Settlers of Catan alternative. We're a fully remote, asynchronous team spread across multiple continents, focused on crafting extremely polished digital board games that people truly love.

About The Role

You'll own product quality for a game played by millions, and you'll do it by shipping fixes, not just filing tickets. Most QA roles stop at "I found the problem." This one doesn't. Your job is to make sure the product experience feels right across web, mobile, and Discord, catching what's broken, what's confusing, and what shouldn't have shipped the way it did.

You Will

  • Fix quality issues directly in the codebase
  • Drive fixes for larger issues end-to-end
  • Run weekly QA sessions on dev and staging builds on a fixed release cycle, with post-release production checks
  • Test PRs in a fast pace - happy path, edge cases, cross-platform - and approve or request changes with clear reasoning
  • Monitor Discord bug channels, validate player reports, and convert confirmed issues into structured tickets
  • Catch things that aren't bugs but are wrong: bad UX, illogical behavior, things that shouldn't have shipped the way they did
  • Ensure every significant change is tested across web, mobile, and Discord
  • Find gaps in the QA process proactively - propose fixes, introduce tools, document and roll out improvements without waiting to be asked

You Are

  • Experienced with full-cycle QA: test planning, execution, reporting, and follow-through
  • Sharp on detail and strong on judgment, you know when something is a bug and when it's a product problem
  • Comfortable in the codebase, enough to open a PR for smaller fixes yourself without blocking on engineering
  • Comfortable across platforms: web, mobile, Discord, and tools like GitHub, Linear, and BrowserStack
  • A clear async communicator: your bug reports are structured, your feedback is direct, and nothing gets lost
  • AI-fluent: you actively use AI tools to work faster and smarter
  • Self-directed: you find problems, figure out solutions, and ship without hand-holding
  • Responsive: you treat broken production like a fire

Bonus Points

  • You've done QA on multiplayer or real-time games
  • You have automation skills (Selenium, Playwright, Cypress) or want to grow into automation
  • You play Colonist or board games in general
