About the role

About us

Cairns Public Health Unit (CPHU) focuses on the health and wellbeing of populations, rather than of individuals. CPHU aims to minimise the morbidity and mortality from communicable and vaccine-preventable diseases, and environmental health hazards thereby:

Cairns Public Health Unit fulfils the public health regulatory services on behalf of the Department of Health to ensure sound public health standards are maintained in communities.

Our values were developed by our staff, patients and community. They guide our work and actions every day. Our staff are part of the community we serve. We believe that we can improve health outcomes by involving our community in the planning and evaluation of their local health services.

About your role

  • Develop strong relationships with community members to gain insights into their project-related health concerns and needs and actively involve all stakeholders and community in decision-making processes with the view to negotiating mutually agreeable and appropriate outcomes from project activities.
  • Promote the importance of cultural safety among healthcare providers and support their capacity utilising a strengths-based approach as leverage to examine and address challenges to the community's health and wellbeing.
  • Work collaboratively and cultivate networks with Indigenous leaders, community elders and the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Organisation in program areas to support health need identified.
