Department Description

The mission of Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at USD is to provide academic leadership to its college and schools and promote excellence in all of the university's academic programs and initiatives, in order to educate ethical and compassionate leaders.

University Description

The University of San Diego, a contemporary and engaged Roman Catholic institution, was founded by the Diocese of San Diego and the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1949. Governed by an independent board of trustees since 1972, USD remains committed to a liberal arts education grounded in the Catholic intellectual tradition and the pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty. Inspired by this centuries old tradition of Catholic higher education, the University welcomes people of all faith traditions and any, or no, religious background. The future success of USD relies on the contributions of those who seek to foster the development of engaged global citizens and an earnest confrontation of humanity’s urgent challenges.

Detailed Description

This recruitment is open to current University of San Diego tenured faculty only.

Two Provost's AI Faculty Fellows will work closely with the Provost's team focusing on designing strategies and implementing initiatives to support and advance the university's approach to AI in alignment with the Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical Magnifica Humanitas. This position will play an important role in thoughtfully implementing USD’s approach to AI in a way that aligns with our mission, vision, and values, and serves our entire community, especially students, faculty, and staff. Key responsibilities include:

  • Clarity & Guidance: Support the development of institutional guidance and policy on the responsible use of AI in teaching, learning, and administrative practice, and collaborate with faculty, General Counsel, HR, and University Senate as appropriate.
  • Foster Ongoing Dialogue: Collaborate with campus partners to organize speakers and support department- and unit-level conversations that advance campus-wide dialogue on AI.
  • Ensuring Mission Alignment: Support the assessment of enterprise AI tools and resources, and contribute to institutional reporting that tracks USD's progress on AI initiatives.
  • Incentivize Ideation: Contribute to the design and administration of internal grant programs that support faculty and staff exploration of AI, and encourage faculty-student research partnerships to examine the implications of AI within their disciplines.

The Provost's Faculty Fellows reports directly to and works under the general supervision of the Associate Provost for Research and Administration.

The appointment will start as soon as November 15, 2026. This position is renewable on an annual basis for up to two years. Each Faculty Fellow will serve an estimated one month in the summer, with a teaching load of one 3-unit course within their respective departments per each Fall and Spring semester. Each Faculty Fellow is expected to remain active in their ongoing faculty research and scholarship agenda.

Job Requirements

  • Full-time faculty at USD.
  • Strong familiarity with the university's academic and administrative structures.
  • “Institutional-mindedness” as well as demonstrated trust and credibility among colleagues across the university.
  • This position requires clear familiarity with AI tools and techniques alongside institutional judgment, trust, and the ability to work alongside others to move initiatives forward.
  • Additionally, note that given the expectations required of this role including continued scholarship and teaching responsibilities, it is expected that the fellow will not engage in outside employment or consulting for the duration of the appointment.
