About the role

The Department of Transport and Main Roads is seeking a skilled communicator and community engagement professional to join our Program Support team as a permanent AO4 Program Engagement Officer in Rockhampton.

This role offers the opportunity to help communities understand, participate in and prepare for road and transport projects being delivered across Central Queensland. Your work will support the delivery of the Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program, which improves the transport network used by local communities, businesses and visitors every day.

About the role

You will work closely with program managers, project teams and engagement professionals to deliver clear, timely and practical communication for a broad range of audiences. The role combines community engagement, stakeholder liaison, research and professional writing. You will translate detailed project information into communication that people can easily understand and use.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • researching and analysing information to prepare high-quality ministerial and executive briefing notes and correspondence
  • developing community engagement plans, key messages and targeted communication strategies for road and transport projects
  • preparing newsletters, flyers, roadworks advice, displays and other project communication materials
  • drafting media releases, social media content and responses to media enquiries
  • building and maintaining effective relationships with community members, government representatives and other stakeholders
  • supporting project teams to communicate consistently and respond appropriately to community needs
  • managing sensitive project information, correspondence and records in accordance with departmental requirements.

About you

You will be suited to this role if you can communicate complex information clearly, write confidently for different audiences and build productive relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.

You will bring:

  • strong writing, editing and research skills
  • experience developing communication or community engagement materials
  • the ability to adapt your approach for community, executive and government audiences
  • sound judgement when working with sensitive information and competing priorities
  • an understanding of community engagement and stakeholder relationship practices
  • a collaborative approach and a commitment to delivering accurate, customerfocused outcomes.

Experience preparing government correspondence, briefing notes, executive letters or communication for infrastructure projects would be highly regarded. A current Class C driver licence is required. The successful applicant will also be required to undergo a criminal history check before appointment.

Why join us?

Central Queensland Region supports an extensive and diverse transport network, covering coastal, rural and remote communities. You will contribute to projects that make a visible difference to how people travel, access services and stay connected.

You will join a supportive and inclusive workplace that provides:

  • a 36.25-hour working week with flexible working options
  • four weeks annual leave with 17.5% annual leave loading
  • employer superannuation contributions
  • access to salary packaging
  • opportunities to broaden your communication, engagement and governmentwriting experience
  • varied work across road and transport projects throughout Central Queensland
  • professional development and career opportunities within a leading Queensland Government agency.

Applications to remain current for 12 months.
