About the role

About Mistral

Mistral provides full-stack AI solutions: from frontier models to developer tools, applications, and compute. We partner with enterprises tackling the hardest problems across high-stakes industries like finance, manufacturing, defense, healthcare, and the public sector, co-creating customized AI systems that they can run on their terms.

We are a dynamic, collaborative team passionate about AI and its potential to transform society. Our diverse workforce thrives in competitive environments and is committed to driving innovation. Our teams are distributed between Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. We are creative, low-ego and team-spirited.

The Role

We are looking for a hands on, forward-thinking Privacy Legal Counsel to shape and scale our global privacy strategy across cutting-edge AI products, frontier research, commercial partnerships, and internal core operations.

This isn't a typical compliance role focused on boilerplate checklists. Instead, you'll sit right at the heart of innovation, embedding directly with world-class researchers, engineers, product managers and other business leaders to invent impactful, privacy-first solutions for our fast-paced and rapidly evolving AI offerings.

Reporting to the Privacy Legal Lead, you will act as a key strategic partner, mastering complex data flows, evaluating emerging risks with innovative judgment, and empowering cross-functional teams to build fast with confidence.

We are looking for a qualified lawyer with approximately 5–8 years' post-qualification experience in data protection / privacy law, ideally with prior in-house or technology-sector exposure.

Where You'll Make an Impact

1. Champion Privacy-by-Design for our Next-Gen AI Products

  • Guide products from concept to launch by championing privacy-by-design for new AI products, features, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Translate nuanced legal requirements into actionable, developer-friendly product roadmap items and operational frameworks.
  • Stay ahead of global AI and data privacy regulations, translating emerging laws into proactive business strategies.

1. Architect Scalable Privacy Operations

  • Architect next-generation privacy workflows from the ground up, identifying opportunities to automate compliance and eliminate friction.
  • Elevate our core privacy documentation (including DPIAs, ROPAs, TIAs, policies, and public-facing notices) to ensure they are clear, robust, and modern.
  • Streamline day-to-day tasks and governance mechanisms to support rapid scaling while ensuring uncompromised data protection.

1. Empower Other Teams

  • Lead discussions on complex topics including international data transfer frameworks, vendor management, and cross-border data protection strategy.
  • Provide responsive, practical legal support across HR, Marketing, Sales, IT, Security, and Executive leadership.
  • Create engaging, non-legalistic training and self-serve resources that empower non-legal teams to act with speed and autonomy.

What We're Looking For

  • Background : Master degree in law, a bar admission is a plus, as well as an experience in a fast-growing environment
  • Experience: 5 -8 years of experience in a law firm or in a tech company, in IT law and specifically in privacy law and GDPR compliance
  • Knowledge of privacy law: The candidate has a good knowledge of privacy regulations and guidance from national supervisory authorities as well as the EDPB
  • Knowledge of Artificial Intelligence: An understanding of artificial intelligence technologies and their applications is essential
  • Solution oriented approach: The ideal candidate should be able to identify compliance issues and develop effective strategies to address and resolve them. They should be capable of implementing practical solutions
  • Project management: The candidate has good project management skills
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze complex legal and technical issues related to AI and to identify potential legal risks and solutions is important. Candidates should be detail-oriented and have strong problem-solving skills
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication; Strong ability to present complex legal concepts in a clear and understandable manner. Business oriented
  • International mindset: An international experience is a plus
  • Adaptability: Given the rapidly evolving nature of AI technologies and the legal landscape surrounding them, candidates should be adaptable and willing to continuously learn and update their skills and knowledge. Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment. Proactive, flexible, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
