About Metron

Metron is an employee-owned company dedicated to delivering innovative solutions for the most challenging national security problems. For over 40 years, our principled approach to problem-solving has yielded creative solutions at the intersection of advanced mathematics, computer science, physics, and engineering. Our people are leaders in their technical fields and are passionate about solving challenging problems. We look for individuals who share this same passion and can apply their experience in real-world settings.

Metron is seeking a mid-level Software Engineer to help design, build, and mature software systems that support simulation, optimization, and decision support for mission-focused applications.

This role is best suited for an engineer who is comfortable working across the software stack and who can contribute to both technical implementation and product maturation. You will help transform prototypes and advanced technical concepts into reliable, maintainable software used in operational and decision-support settings.

  • Help translate technically sophisticated algorithms, models, and research prototypes into usable software applications
  • Improve software quality through thoughtful design, code readability, testing, documentation, and maintainable engineering practices
  • Build responsive, usable, and intuitive frontends that present complex data and workflows clearly to users
  • Contribute across the full development lifecycle, including concept exploration, prototyping, implementation, testing, demonstration, deployment, and sustainment
  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to understand user needs and deliver practical, high-impact solutions

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, applied mathematics, engineering, or a related technical field
  • At least 2 years of professional software development experience
  • Strong foundation in object-oriented design and software development, with experience in Java, C++, Rust, or other comparable programming languages
  • Experience creating backend software and/or APIs in collaborative production or prototype environments
  • Strong engineering fundamentals, sound technical judgment, and the ability to collaborate effectively with researchers, engineers, and end users
  • U.S. CITIZENSHIP REQUIRED; successful candidates will be subject to a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information

Desired Qualifications

  • Active SECRET security clearance
  • Experience writing high-performance, multi-threaded (parallel/concurrent) software
  • Experience developing high-quality software in an environment where readability, maintainability, testing, and disciplined engineering practices are valued
  • Experience in defense, national security, or other mission-driven environments
  • Experience with TypeScript and React or other modern frontend development frameworks
  • Experience with 3D, geospatial, or high-performance visualization technologies such as WebGL or OpenGL
  • Experience with data-intensive or distributed systems, including databases, messaging systems, and asynchronous processing
  • Familiarity with AI/ML-enabled applications, including LLM-integrated systems
  • Experience with cloud and containerized deployment environments such as AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines
