About the role

At Parallel, we build AI agents that help healthcare organizations automate their administrative processes and unlock additional revenue, starting with medical coding.

Today, up to 25% of healthcare spending is lost to manual, repetitive administrative tasks. Legacy software hasn't helped: it has made work slower, more complex and more frustrating for care teams.

We believe AI agents can change this. Our technology combines large language models with system-level automation to do real work inside existing hospital tools. No integration, no disruption.

Our first agent automates coding and frees up time for medical teams to focus on patients.

We launched in 2024 and already have 800+ customers and a team of 30+ people. We are backed by top-tier investors (Index Ventures, Y Combinator, Hexa, Frst, Kima Ventures, Better Angle and the CEO of Mistral AI), and this is just the beginning.

The future of healthcare isn't just digital, it's automated. Come help us build it!

The role

As our Medical Coding Lead for the US market you will be our coding authority and the first coding expert on our founding US team. You will teach our AI engineers how US inpatient coding really works, settle the hard cases, and make sure every suggestion we send to a hospital is accurate and compliant.

Parallel uses AI to take administrative work off hospital teams, starting with inpatient coding. Our agents read the full patient record before billing, find what was documented but not coded, and coders validate every suggestion. We work with around 100 hospitals and clinics in France and are launching in the US in 2027.

  • Reports to: Paul Lafforgue, CEO and co-founder, who leads the US launch.
  • Location: New York, with travel to customer hospital sites 40% (pilot hospitals, conferences) + 2-4 weeks of onboarding in Paris.
  • Team: you will recruit and lead our US coders as pilots scale.

Your mission for 2027: make our US coding logic accurate enough that pilot hospitals trust it, and be the person who proves it to them.

What you will do

  1. Build our US coding logic with our AI engineers
  2. Turn the ICD-10-CM/PCS Official Guidelines, Coding Clinic, MS-DRG and APR-DRG logic into rules and specs our engineers can build on.
  3. Write annotation guidelines and build the test sets our models are measured against.
  4. Review model errors every week, explain why they are wrong, and flag the edge cases that hurt accuracy.
  5. Settle the hard cases
  6. Be our reference on principal diagnosis selection, sequencing, CC/MCC capture, ICD-10-PCS root operations and POA.
  7. Work with our physician advisor on clinical validation cases (sepsis, malnutrition, respiratory failure…).
  8. Make pilots succeed
  9. Analyze each hospital's coding practices and workflows before go-live.
  10. Run second-level review before our suggestions reach the hospital's coders.
  11. Present audit results to the hospital's HIM and coding leaders and get their sign-off for go-live.
  12. Join sales meetings to show what our coding looks like up close.
  13. Own coding quality and compliance
  14. Make sure every suggestion is supported by documentation and has an audit trail.
  15. Keep us on the right side of compliance: no upcoding, compliant queries, clean audit records.
  16. Build the US coding team
  17. Recruit and lead part-time coders as pilots scale.
  18. Work with our team of 20 coding experts in France.

Who you are

Experience

  • 5 to 10 years in inpatient coding, including coding audit or DRG validation.
  • CCS, plus RHIA or RHIT. CDIP or CCDS is a plus.
  • Experience at a coding, CDI or revenue cycle technology vendor (encoder, computer-assisted coding, AI coding) is a big plus.
  • You have seen several hospitals: through audit or consulting work, payer-side review, or a multi-hospital coding quality role.

Mindset

  • Expert and rigorous: you settle hard cases with references, not opinions.
  • Curious about AI: you want to shape how it is used in coding, not just judge it.
  • Clear communicator: you explain complex coding decisions to engineers and to HIM directors alike, in writing and in person.
  • Builder: you are comfortable starting from scratch in a startup.

Requirements

  • Based in New York or willing to relocate, with US work authorization.

Hiring process

  1. Intro call (30 min).
  2. Medical coding exercise (about 2 hours): three hard inpatient cases. Settle each one with references.
  3. Working session with one of our AI engineers: turn one of your answers into a rule or annotation guideline.
  4. Call with Paul (CEO) and Dr. Quentin Jarrion (physician, chief medical officer), then references.

We care about who you are, not just what's on your CV.

If you're drawn to what we're building but don't meet every requirement, we still want to hear from you. Studies show that women in particular tend to apply only when they meet 100% of the criteria. If that's you, please don't let that hold you back. We'd love to receive your application.
