About Karner Psychiatric Services

Since 1985, Karner Psychiatric Services has grown into one of the largest and most respected outpatient mental health practices in New York's Capital Region. Its team of psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, mental health counselors, and psychiatric nurse practitioners serves clients of all ages from offices in Guilderland, Clifton Park, Saratoga Springs, and now Watertown.

Karner opened its Watertown office in August 2026 to bring psychiatric care closer to home for Jefferson County and the Fort Drum community. Watertown is the first practice in Jefferson County to offer TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation), an FDA-cleared, non-medication treatment for depression. Before it opened, local patients had to travel to Syracuse for TMS. The office also offers psychiatric evaluation and medication management with an on-site psychiatric nurse practitioner. That means you'll work alongside prescribers, not alone.

The Watertown team understands military life. Karner is in-network with TRICARE and Martin's Point, and the front-office team includes military spouses who know the schedules and transitions that come with life at Fort Drum.

You'll be one of the first therapists at the new office, joining at the ground floor of a growing location that Karner is actively marketing. You'll also have the backing of an established practice with more than 40 years of history. Karner's mission is simple: to provide the highest quality of individualized and compassionate outpatient treatment, so the people it serves can improve their quality of life.

What you'll do

  • Provide individual outpatient therapy to clients with a range of clinical presentations
  • Build your caseload over time — you decide how many clients you want to carry
  • Set your own schedule; evening or weekend hours are welcome but not required
  • Work from your own dedicated office in Watertown at least half the time, with the option of telehealth for the rest
  • Complete documentation for your sessions (Karner keeps paperwork and meetings to a minimum)
  • Optional and paid: help grow the practice through community outreach and referral relationships

Qualifications

Required

  • Master's degree in social work, mental health counseling, or a related field
  • Current New York State license: LCSW, LCSW-R, LMHC, LMSW, or MHC-LP
  • At least 1 year of post-graduate clinical experience
  • Able to work on-site in Watertown, NY at least 50% of the time

Preferred

  • More than 1 year of post-graduate experience
  • Outpatient experience in a mental health setting
  • Experience working with military service members and their families
  • Familiarity with TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation)
  • Interest in community outreach and building referral relationships

Compensation and benefits

  • Pay: $50–$54 per session hour for fully licensed clinicians (LCSW, LCSW-R, LMHC); $40–$45 per session hour for master's-level clinicians (LMSW, MHC-LP)
  • Fee-for-service: you're paid for each completed session. When a client no-shows or cancels late, you receive the no-show fee if the client pays it.
  • Paid sick time: accrued as you work, up to 40 hours per calendar year
  • Paid outreach work: time spent on marketing and community outreach is compensated
  • Clinical supervision: available as needed, including supervision toward advanced licensure (e.g., LMSW to LCSW)
  • Raises: merit-based

Why Karner

  • The variety and autonomy of private practice, without the hassle of running your own business
  • Administrative support handled for you, with minimal paperwork and meetings
  • Flexible scheduling you control, for real work/life balance
  • Your own dedicated office in a brand-new location
  • Clinical supervision when you want it, including hours toward advanced licensure
  • A supportive team, with paths into clinical supervision for those who want them
