About the role

This is a continuous recruitment pool to fill various temporary fixed-term vacancies in various chambers across the state. Applications will remain current for 12 months. If you are required for an interview, we will contact you directly

About us

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is a vital part of Queensland's justice system, representing the State in prosecuting criminal matters across courts such as the High Court of Australia, Supreme Court, District Court, and more. Our work addresses complex and sensitive legal matters, ensuring justice is upheld with professionalism and integrity.

About your opportunity

As a Legal Officer, your primary responsibility will be to expertly prepare cases referred to the ODPP for prosecution. Here's why this role is an exceptional opportunity for motivated legal professionals:

  • Make a real impact: Take charge of preparing prosecution matters, including appeal submissions, with professionalism and efficiency, ensuring timely delivery of justice.
  • Engage with diverse stakeholders: Build meaningful connections and collaborate effectively with defence counsel, solicitors, police officers, victims, and witnesses.
  • Showcase your advocacy Skills: Represent the ODPP as an advocate in a variety of settings, including prosecuting or defending appeals in the District Court, handling sentences, bail applications, mentions, and callovers in the Magistrates and higher courts.
  • Lead in critical hearings: Advocate in committal and summary hearings in the Magistrates Court, with opportunities to develop your expertise depending on the location.
  • Support those in need: Provide vital liaison with complainants and their families, especially in sensitive and complex cases involving sexual and violent offences.
  • Inspire and lead: Mentor, motivate, and guide legal support staff, fostering a supportive and high performing workplace culture.
  • Drive positive change: Play an active role in initiatives that enhance work practices, empowering you to contribute to continuous improvement within the organisation.

We're looking for a dynamic and motivated professional to fill this integral role.

Success in this position means excelling in the following areas:

  • Driving accountability and results: Leverage your legal expertise to apply legal principles, draft key legal documents, provide sound legal advice, and act as an effective advocate in the Magistrates and/or higher courts.
  • Leading with strategy: Use your strong interpersonal and communication skills to liaise, consult, and negotiate with a wide range of stakeholders, ensuring collaborative and strategic outcomes.
  • Building strong relationships: Inspire and support your team by supervising, training, and mentoring legal and support staff. Demonstrate empathy and awareness in addressing the needs of victims of crime.
  • Embracing continuous growth: Commit to upholding the highest professional and ethical standards while continually developing your skills and expertise.

Mandatory qualifications, conditions and requirements

You will be admitted as a Legal Practitioner in a State or Territory of Australia (please indicate date of admission).

If you're ready to take on a rewarding challenge and make a real difference, we'd love to hear from you!
