About the role

The Team

Internal Audit is a unit of the Department of Health that sits within the Office of the Chief Risk Officer (OCRO). The unit’s role is to help the Department achieve its objectives by assessing whether governance, risk management and internal control arrangements are effective, efficient and fit for purpose. W examine the internal systems, processes and behaviours that should support the delivery of safe, sustainable and high-quality health services for the Tasmanian community.

Internal Audit works across a range of organisational and operational risks, from clinical and corporate governance to financial management, workforce capability, information systems, integrity, major projects and emerging strategic challenges. We make recommendations on how to controls can be strengthened, organisational performance can be improved, accountability enhanced and decision-making informed appropriately.

While structurally the team sits within the Office of the Chief Risk Officer, it function operates independently of management and is accountable to the Department's Audit and Risk Committee and the Secretary. This enables Internal Audit to provide trusted assurance and insights to senior leaders, helping management respond to current risks while building capability and resilience for the future.

The Role

The Internal Audit Consultant works across the Department of Health's diverse and complex operating environment, helping strengthen governance, risk management, organisational performance and service delivery. Working with a high degree of autonomy, the Consultant leads reviews and projects from planning through to implementation monitoring, engages directly with senior leaders and stakeholders, and is expected to provide practical insights and recommendations that support informed decision-making, accountability and continuous improvement.

The role offers exposure to some of the Department's most significant strategic, operational, financial, workforce, integrity and service delivery challenges. In addition to leading reviews, the Consultant contributes to investigations, advisory engagements and special projects. Through strong analytical capability, professional judgement and relationship-building, the Consultant supports Executive Leadership, the Audit and Risk Committee and the Head of Internal Audit to deliver better outcomes for Tasmania's health system and the community it serves.

You will need

  • Experience in internal audit, external audit, risk management, governance, compliance, advisory or related professional services environments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify risks, examine underlying causes and develop practical, value-adding recommendations.
  • Excellent communication, influencing and stakeholder engagement skills, with the confidence to build productive relationships and work effectively with senior leaders and diverse stakeholders.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities, exercise sound judgement, work autonomously and deliver high-quality outcomes within agreed timeframes.
  • An understanding of governance, risk management, control frameworks and assurance principles, and the ability to apply these concepts within a complex organisational environment.
  • A collaborative and curious approach, supported by relevant tertiary qualifications and/or professional memberships or certifications (such as CIA, CA, CPA, CISA or similar), with a commitment to continuous improvement, organisational learning and professional standards.
