About the role

About Westmag

Westmag is the American manufacturer of drone motors and robot actuators, backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Founders Fund, Lux Capital, NFDG, Menlo Ventures, and other top investors. Westmag is committed to building and scaling in the U.S. to serve the global market. For more information, visit westmag.com.

About the Role

As the Health & Safety Manager at Westmag, you will build and lead the safety program that protects everyone on our production floors. Reporting to the Head of Production Operations with a dotted line to the COO, you will own Cal/OSHA and federal OSHA compliance, written safety programs, training and incident management across our South San Francisco, California and Idaho facilities, for a workforce of full-time employees and contract operators.

Working on the factory floor alongside Production, Manufacturing Engineering, Automation and Facilities, you will make sure every new line, machine and team member is brought on safely, and your work will directly shape Westmag's ability to ship millions of motors and actuators from U.S. factories. This role is based in South San Francisco with regular travel to our Idaho facility.

What You'll Own

  • Own Westmag's Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), finalize and maintain our Workplace Violence Prevention Plan, and keep all written safety programs current as operations change.
  • Build and run core safety programs, including lockout/tagout, machine guarding, hazard communication, PPE, forklifts and powered industrial trucks, emergency action and fire prevention, ergonomics, and heat illness prevention.
  • Identify and control hazards across our processes, including automated winding and assembly cells, robotics, stator steel stamping, rare-earth magnet handling and finishing, curing, adhesives and solvents, and high-voltage testing.
  • Lead job hazard analyses and pre-start safety reviews for new lines, equipment and process changes, and build safety requirements into equipment specs and facility layouts.
  • Build site-specific onboarding and training for contract operators, and partner with staffing agencies to define responsibilities for training, PPE, injury reporting and return to work.
  • Deliver new-hire safety orientation and recurring training, and develop line leads as safety trainers as the team grows.
  • Launch near-miss and hazard reporting, lead incident investigations using root cause analysis, and drive corrective actions to closure.
  • Maintain OSHA 300/300A/301 records, lead agency inspections, and coordinate environmental compliance such as the Hazardous Materials Business Plan (CERS), hazardous waste and air permits.
  • Run daily floor walks, regular inspections and a cross-functional safety committee, and report safety metrics (TRIR, DART, near misses, corrective action closure) to leadership monthly.
  • Champion a culture where anyone can stop unsafe work, and help build the scalable EHS systems and team that will support Westmag's U.S. factory growth.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of health and safety experience in manufacturing, including at least 2 years leading a site safety program.
  • Working knowledge of Cal/OSHA (Title 8) and federal OSHA general industry standards and OSHA recordkeeping.
  • Hands-on experience with machine guarding, lockout/tagout, hazard communication and incident investigation.
  • Experience managing safety for a mixed workforce of employees and temporary or contract workers.
  • Experience managing safety programs across multiple sites, and willingness to travel regularly between California and Idaho.
  • Demonstrated ability to build safety programs and training from scratch in a fast-changing environment.
  • Excellent communication and training skills, with the ability to work directly on the production floor and present to leadership.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CSP, ASP or CIH certification, or an OSHA 500/510 trainer credential.
  • Experience scaling a safety program through a new plant startup or high-volume production ramp.
  • Experience working in an AS9100 or ISO 9001 certified manufacturing environment.
  • Background in electric motor, electronics, metal stamping, or automated and robotic manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with robot and machinery safety standards such as ANSI/RIA R15.06, ISO 10218 and ANSI B11.
  • Experience with combustible dust, magnetic materials, or industrial hygiene sampling (noise, dust, solvents).
  • Familiarity with California and Idaho environmental compliance (CERS, BAAQMD, Idaho DEQ) and ISO 45001.

Westmag is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, creed, sex, national origin, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, or protected veteran status.
