About the role

About WellTheory

WellTheory is a digital health company helping people with autoimmune conditions take control of their health through personalized care, nutrition guidance, and ongoing coaching. We're a team of 60+ passionate people who care deeply about helping our members reduce symptoms, feel better, and live fuller lives — while helping employers and payors reduce their spend.

About the Role

WellTheory is hiring its first Head of Engineering.

You’ll lead a talented, largely self-directed team and set how we build: our process, our quality bar, our technical direction, and who we hire. This is a player-coach role; Expect to spend 20-30% of your time in the codebase and the rest leading the team, shaping the platform, and partnering with product, design, and leadership. You’ll report to our Co-Founder & Chief Product Officer.

We’re a Series A company operating like a much bigger one. We build the member app, in-house tools for our Care Team, and the insurance and data infrastructure that connects us to employers, health plans, and channel partners, all with HIPAA and SOC 2 Type 2 in mind.

We’re looking for a leader who has seen scale before, knows what to build now so we don’t have to rebuild later, and can empower experienced, high-achieving engineers.

What You'll Do

  • Build and grow the team. Run 1:1s, set a high bar, and own hiring, performance, and career growth.
  • Define how we ship. Design planning, code review, testing, release, and incident practices that are fast enough for a small AI-native team and rigorous enough for compliance.
  • Set technical direction. Make the foundational architecture calls with our founding engineer, so velocity holds as we scale the team and member base.
  • Own platform and DevOps. Set the roadmap, including non-prod environments that keep PHI out of day-to-day development.
  • Build compliance in, not on. Work with ops and compliance leads on the engineering side of HIPAA, SOC 2, and HITRUST.
  • Make AI core to how we build. Roll out coding agents, evals, and internal tooling that multiply every engineer’s impact.
  • Stay hands-on. Review code, pair on the hard problems, and ship when it’s the highest-leverage use of your time.
  • Shape the roadmap. Partner with our Staff PM and Product Design Lead on scope and tradeoffs.
  • Speak for engineering. Represent the team at the leadership table.

You Might Be a Great Fit If You...

  • Have led engineering teams through growth. You’ve managed senior ICs, built teams, and know what breaks at each stage and what to fix first.
  • Have built in a regulated environment. Healthcare, fintech, or another industry where data handling, security, and audits shape how you build. You treat compliance as table stakes, not a blocker.
  • Spot great talent. You can tell great from good in an interview or code review, and you hire for potential.
  • Stay hands-on. You’ve shipped production TypeScript or JavaScript recently and want to keep doing it.
  • Own systems. Reliability, observability, environments, and incident response are yours, not delegated.
  • Change how a team works with AI. You know how to help teams create leverage without also creating AI slop.
  • Partner without ego. You share ownership with strong product, design, and engineering leads and empower the team already in place.
  • Have partnered closely with product and design. You've worked in a model where engineering, product, and design shape the roadmap together, and you know what a healthy day-to-day partnership looks like.
  • Communicate clearly. We’re small and fully remote, so you write things down and document decisions.

This position requires current work authorization in the United States. We are unable to provide visa sponsorship at this time. This role is US-based and requires access to protected health information.

Bonus Points

  • You've worked in digital health or B2B2C healthcare and understand eligibility, claims, or care delivery tooling
  • You've led a SOC 2 or HITRUST effort from the engineering side
  • You've been called a "force of nature" and have done something most people wouldn't: run a marathon, started a company, earned a degree while working full-time, or overcome significant adversity

What We Offer

  • A team that genuinely cares about each other and the members we serve
  • A fully remote company that gathers every year for an annual retreat
