The AI Private Banker is Nu's intelligent financial partner - an AI-powered advisor that helps millions of customers understand their finances, make confident decisions, and take action seamlessly. It is built on Nu's proprietary foundation models and data infrastructure, developed by the AI Core team that joined Nu through the Hyperplane acquisition. This is not a chatbot bolted onto a banking app. It is a fundamental reimagining of how people relate to their money, powered by conversational AI, recommendation engines, and real-time personalization across mobile and web.
The AI Private Banker represents Nu's next chapter and one of the company's highest-priority strategic bets. It sits at the intersection of banking and frontier AI, and every design decision here directly shapes how millions of people experience financial guidance.
About the Role
We are looking for a Senior Design Manager (M4) to lead the design organization for the AI Private Banker team in Palo Alto.
As Sr Design Manager, you will lead a multidisciplinary team of product designers and content designers (6+) crafting the AI Private Banker experience - shaping how customers interact with our AI advisor, how trust is earned, and how complex insights become simple, actionable, and human.
But you are no longer just building for the AI Private Banker vertical. You are establishing the foundational experience systems that will power AI across all of Nu, while ensuring alignment with the broader Magic App vision (Nu's next-generation unified app experience). In this context, you will help define the design vision, systems, cultural anchors, and rituals that make this product feel unmistakably Nu: clear, kind, and empowering - bridging product-specific excellence with company-wide coherence.
You will partner closely with Rohan Ramanath (GM, AI Core) and the broader product, data science, and engineering leadership to translate AI capabilities into trusted, explainable human experiences. This is a high-visibility role with senior stakeholder exposure across the US and Brazil, requiring someone who can navigate ambiguity, align teams across borders and time zones, and find structure in an emerging space.
What You'll Do
- Lead and inspire a multidisciplinary team of product designers and content designers (6+) working on conversational, visual, and systemic layers of the AI experience
- Define and evolve the design north star for the AI Private Banker - how it looks, feels, and behaves across touchpoints
- Partner with product, data science, and engineering to translate AI capabilities into trusted, explainable human experiences
- Build and scale design systems for AI interaction patterns (voice, confidence levels, error recovery, transparency)
- Coach and grow the team - helping them balance craft excellence with experimentation and speed
- Drive cross-functional alignment, ensuring the design voice stays consistent from early prototypes to production
- Create frameworks for evaluating AI experience quality - usability, emotion, trust, and value perception
- Establish the cultural anchors and rituals that make the design team operate with clarity, purpose, and velocity
- Represent design to senior leadership across the US and Brazil, navigating complex cross-functional and cross-cultural dynamics
What Great Looks Like
- You have built or led design teams working on AI- or data-powered experiences (e.g., personalization, recommendations, chat, insights)
- You think systemically but care deeply about detail and tone
- You are a natural coach - you know how to elevate others' craft and clarity
- You balance strategic thinking with the ability to dive deep into design problems
- You are comfortable working with uncertainty and helping teams find structure in emerging spaces
- You advocate for human values in AI - fairness, clarity, empathy - not as slogans but as design principles
- You thrive in high-growth, high-change environments and can adapt as the company, team structures, and priorities evolve
- Experience in fintech, banking, or regulated industries is a plus but not required
