About the role

Fraud Prevention Strategy Specialist

Fraud Prevention team · Berlin, Germany (office-first)

Team description

SumUp's Fraud Prevention team protects merchants and their customers by stopping fraud across multiple markets, products and payment types, with a strong focus on Europe. As a Fraud Prevention Strategy Specialist, you'll turn data into the rules, thresholds and authentication flows that decide which payments go through, helping us reduce losses without adding friction for genuine customers. It's a role for someone who enjoys complex problems, wants real influence over how fraud prevention evolves, and likes turning changing European regulation into practical controls.

What you'll do

  • Shape fraud prevention strategy for SumUp's consumer and merchant products across global markets
  • Analyse large datasets to spot fraud trends, performance shifts and opportunities to improve
  • Design, configure and test decision engine rules, thresholds and authentication strategies, including Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) flows, and provide analytical input for data science models
  • Monitor fraud, chargeback and false positive performance, then investigate root causes and recommend clear, evidence based actions
  • Turn PSD2, European card scheme rules and regulatory change into practical fraud controls

What you'll bring

  • Proven experience in fraud prevention, fraud strategy or risk management within payments, fintech or another data driven environment, including hands on work configuring decision engines, rule based systems or authentication strategies.
  • Strong knowledge of PSD2 and SCA, including exemptions and 3D Secure flows, plus a solid understanding of European card networks (such as Visa, Mastercard and regional schemes) and their fraud and dispute rules.
  • Advanced skills in SQL and Python, with experience working on data pipelines and large datasets.
  • Good understanding of Card Present and Card Not Present fraud patterns, and of how fraud, authentication and customer behaviour differ across European and global markets.
  • Ability to balance friction, fraud losses and false positives when making decisions, and to explain recommendations clearly to technical teams, business teams and senior stakeholders.
