As Nigeria’s largest merchant acquirer, we power most of the country’s point-of-sale (POS) transactions. Through our subsidiaries, Moniepoint Inc. processes over $250 billion in digital payment transaction value annually.

Why Portugal

We have a small but strong group of team members in Portugal, having joined us from companies like Feedzai and OLX. As we continue to build out our engineering organisation across Europe, Portugal is a market we are actively hiring into.

So, now we are looking for our Engineering Managers to join us in Portugal.

About the role

As an Engineering Manager, you will drive the successful delivery and execution of projects within your teams. You will manage end-to-end technical planning, ensuring that product requirements are translated into actionable tasks, while orchestrating collaboration between various stakeholders, including engineers, product managers, QA, and UX. This role requires a deep understanding of software design and development and the ability to plan, execute, and deliver product features in a timely and predictable manner. You will also be responsible for maintaining high technical standards, managing team bandwidth, and ensuring project milestones are met with efficiency and accuracy.

What you’ll get to do

  • Own end-to-end delivery and execution across cross-functional teams within your product area, ensuring predictable and high-quality outcomes.
  • Evaluate business and product requirements for technical feasibility and architectural alignment, translating them into well-defined EPICs and technical user stories.
  • Partner closely with Product Managers, UX Designers, and Engineers to continuously refine, groom, and prioritize the backlog.
  • Plan and drive sprint execution with clearly defined goals, using project planning tools to establish timelines, delivery milestones, and surface dependencies early.
  • Champion engineering processes and rituals that enable strong collaboration, accountability, and team efficiency.
  • Monitor team velocity and capacity to optimize resource allocation, proactively balancing bandwidth against delivery commitments.
  • Coordinate cross-team dependencies and stakeholder alignment to remove bottlenecks and maintain smooth execution.
  • Stay hands-on in critical initiatives by guiding design decisions, enforcing sound design patterns, and participating in code reviews to maintain high engineering quality.
  • Ensure robust monitoring, alerting, and observability for all owned services, consistently meeting defined SLIs and SLOs.
  • Partner with Product Managers to define, track, and publish post-release product metrics, driving transparency and continuous improvement.

To succeed in this role, you should have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 8-10 years of experience as a Software Developer, Software Engineer, or in a similar hands-on technical role.
  • 5+ years of strong experience building production systems using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Minimum 3 years of proven engineering leadership experience managing high-performing teams.
  • Solid grasp of Agile methodologies, including sprint planning, backlog grooming, and iterative delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex product requirements into well-structured EPICs, user stories, and tasks.
  • Strong backend engineering expertise; exposure to frontend technologies is a plus.
  • Experience with project planning and tracking tools to visualize and manage delivery timelines.
  • Familiarity with engineering, product health metrics, and monitoring tools to drive data-informed decisions.
  • Hands-on capability to debug complex production issues, lead incident response, and conduct blameless RCA.
  • Good understanding of modern deployment practices, including CI/CD pipelines, release management, and associated metrics.
  • Ability to drive alignment across cross-functional stakeholders, both technical and non-technical.
  • Excellent risk management, dependency tracking, and stakeholder communication skills.
  • Proven track record of improving team velocity, delivery predictability, and engineering excellence.

Generic Skills

  • Problem-solving: Ability to assess complex problems, find solutions, and make sound decisions.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical documentation and stakeholder reporting.
  • Adaptability: Able to thrive in a fast-paced, changing environment, adjusting strategies as needed.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous in documenting technical requirements and ensuring all aspects of a project are accounted for.

Supervisory skills

  • Team Management: Experience in managing and mentoring engineers, ensuring team growth and performance.
  • Resource Allocation: Ability to assess bandwidth and manage resource distribution to optimize team performance.
  • Feedback: Conduct regular performance reviews, providing constructive feedback and fostering a growth-oriented environment.
  • Stakeholder Management: Lead project status reviews, manage expectations, and ensure smooth communication between teams and leadership.

What we can offer you

  • Culture - We put our people first and prioritize the well-being of every team member. We’ve built a company where all opinions carry weight and where all voices are heard. We value and respect each other and always look out for one another. Above all, we are human.
  • Learning - We have a learning and development-focused environment with an emphasis on knowledge sharing, training, and regular internal technical talks.
  • Compensation - You’ll receive an attractive salary, pension, health insurance, paid leave, plus other benefits.

What to expect in the hiring process

  • A preliminary phone call with one of our recruiters.
  • A live coding and code review session.
  • A system design and technical discussion round.
  • A project planning, execution, and product thinking round.
  • A behavioral and technical interview with the hiring manager.
