About the role

There was a time when all of America believed that the future of the physical world could be radically different. The engineers of the mid-1900s put a man on the moon in eight years, designed and built planes and submarines from scratch in under three, and conceived of building things we wouldn’t even be able to dream up today.

Today, the last of the engineers who imagined and built these systems are retiring. As they go, we lose not only the engineering knowledge gained from their decades of imagination and trial-and-error, but also the spirit that made that imagination possible.

Amca is working day-in and day-out to restore America’s ability to engineer anything that our critical systems depend on, and reinvigorate the cycle of creation that allows imagination to shape physical reality. We rapidly develop and manufacture new critical components and subsystems required to build and sustain the planes, military vehicles, and core infrastructure America needs. By restoring the capability of our antiquated supply chains, we increase the country’s capacity to imagine and realize new systems, and make a physical world that looks very different from today.

Overview

The EHS (Environment, Health & Safety) Engineer builds and implements the EHS program across all Amca sites. The role is based at Protoshop, Amca's R&D and production factory, which runs a wide range of machinery and test equipment. Responsibilities include initial site evaluations, safety plans, and training at each site. This position is 5 days a week onsite in El Segundo, CA, with up to 20% travel to other Amca sites.

Responsibilities

  • Implement EHS across all Amca sites: perform initial site evaluations, establish site-specific safety plans and training, and drive gap closure to a common standard
  • Own OSHA and Cal/OSHA compliance across sites, including the Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), written safety programs, inspections, and recordkeeping
  • Conduct hazard assessments for existing operations and every new piece of equipment or process, and define required controls and PPE
  • Own the hazardous materials program: chemical approval, SDS management, hazard communication, storage, labeling, and hazardous waste disposal
  • Lead incident investigations and drive safety tickets to closure with root cause and corrective action
  • Build and deliver safety training (ex. new-hire, hazmat, PPE, lockout/tagout, electrical and high-voltage safety, pressure safety) and track completion in Amca's training system
  • Manage environmental and safety permits, regulatory reporting, and agency inspections
  • Partner with shop leadership, facilities, and engineering so safety is designed into new equipment, layouts, and buildouts
  • Track safety metrics and report trends and priority actions to leadership

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of EHS experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Working knowledge of Cal/OSHA or federal OSHA regulations, hazard communication, and hazardous waste requirements
  • Experience writing safety programs, conducting hazard assessments, and leading incident investigations
  • Experience developing and delivering safety training
  • Willingness to travel to other Amca sites up to 20% of the time

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, environmental, chemical, mechanical, or industrial engineering, or a related field
  • Safety certification such as ASP, CSP, or CHST
  • Experience with electrical safety (NFPA 70E), machine guarding, lockout/tagout, and chemical processes such as potting and solvents
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, or other regulated manufacturing
  • Experience implementing or scaling an EHS program across multiple sites

Annual Salary Range

$105,000—$150,000 USD
