About the role

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Player Development department is dedicated to fostering the comprehensive growth of our minor league players. Our mission is to advance the Boston Red Sox in pursuit of World Championships through a comprehensive and collaborative player development system. Our approach involves the creation of world-class player programs and efficiently scaling them across our player pool. Collaborating closely with other departments, we establish effective frameworks for exploration, learning, and development. Additionally, we work closely with Amateur Scouting, International Scouting, and Pro Scouting to ensure seamless player transitions into the Red Sox organization. Simply put, we strive to be the standard in player and staff development.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The DR Defensive Coach is primarily responsible for the on-field implementation, execution, and tracking of evidence-based defensive and baserunning development for academy players in the DR. The candidate will play a key role in executing daily training initiatives and translating organizational priorities into a high-quality on-field training environment. This role also includes the opportunity to impact player development through player education, participating in player meetings, player feedback and other responsibilities that support the staff and players at the academy. As part of the responsibilities, the DR Defensive Coach will collaborate with players and field staff to maximize departmental buy-in. The role will report to the Latin American Field Coordinator and the Senior Director, Player Development, and work daily alongside academy personnel.

The ideal candidate must be growth-minded, intellectually curious, data-driven, collaborative, and must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.

This position will be based out of our academy in the Dominican Republic.

  • Work with DR staff to provide consistent feedback loops via multiple platforms including after-action reviews, leaderboards and other initiatives.
  • Support the defensive and baserunning portion of player meetings, tracking and reporting on player goal progress.
  • Support other minor league programs and initiatives as directed by Player Development leadership.
  • Spanish proficiency is ideal, but not a requirement.

COMPETENCIES

  • Evaluate and prescribe best-in-class drills to address deficiencies in each individual player.
  • Able to develop programming towards organizationally defined KPIs.
  • Understanding of how to construct training environments that put position players in a position to improve skill and/or talent.
  • Able to cultivate trust and player buy-in.
  • Willing and able to use technology to maximize the effectiveness of programming.
  • Able to develop key takeaways from large amounts of data to identify high leverage areas of development for each player.

At the Boston Red Sox we go beyond embracing diversity. We’re committed to living by our values, strengthening our community, and creating a workplace where people genuinely feel like they belong.

Prospective employees will receive consideration without discrimination based on race, religious creed, color, sex, age, national origin, handicap, disability, military/veteran status, ancestry, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression or protected genetic information.
