About the role

Computer World Services, Corp. (CWS) seeks a Journeyman Database and Application Support Engineer to support database availability, application operations, service restoration, component upgrades, and recovery validation for the USMEPCOM ENLIST program.

The engineer diagnoses database outages, application dependencies, connection failures, unavailable services, certificate problems, and API issues across database, application, middleware, server, network, cloud, and security components. The role coordinates with enterprise IT operations teams and software teams when resolution requires code analysis or correction, focusing on production support, integration, recovery, and testing rather than primary application development.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Monitor and support the availability, performance, health, and recoverability of enterprise databases and applications.
  • Diagnose database availability issues, failed services, connection failures, authentication problems, resource constraints, and performance degradation, including listeners, connection strings, pools, drivers, service accounts, and network paths.
  • Analyze application dependencies across databases, servers, middleware, APIs, certificates, networks, cloud, storage, and external interfaces, using logs, metrics, traces, and alerts to isolate faults.
  • Diagnose and resolve certificate failures (expiration, trust chain, hostname, binding, private key, protocol) and support certificate installation and renewal.
  • Diagnose REST, SOAP, API gateway, endpoint, authentication, authorization, payload, and timeout issues.
  • Support relational database platforms, application and web servers, middleware, schedulers, integration services, and runtime components.
  • Participate in Outage Response Team activities, performing triage, gathering diagnostics, and supporting approved mitigation, workarounds, and recovery, and maintain incident timelines.
  • Coordinate with operations teams on infrastructure issues and with software teams on code-related defects, providing logs, traces, reproduction steps, and impact assessments, and validating corrections.
  • Support root-cause analysis and track post-incident corrective and preventive actions through completion.
  • Execute implementation plans, upgrade procedures, and rollback steps for database, application, middleware, and server upgrades, with pre- and post-implementation validation.
  • Support backup, restoration, replication, failover, high-availability, and disaster-recovery activities, and validate end-to-end transaction paths after recovery.
  • Apply or coordinate approved updates, support remediation of vulnerabilities, IAVAs, CND Directives, and POA&M items, and maintain dependency diagrams, certificate inventories, recovery procedures, and troubleshooting guides.

Education & Experience

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of relevant database support, application support, systems engineering, production operations, or enterprise IT experience.
  • Demonstrated experience diagnosing database availability, application dependencies, connection failures, services, certificates, and API-related outages.
  • Preferred:
  • Experience supporting enterprise databases and applications in a federal or DoD environment.
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, AWS relational database services, Azure SQL, or comparable platforms, including clustering, replication, and failover.
  • Experience with IIS, Apache, Tomcat, WebLogic, JBoss, .NET, Java, or comparable application-server technologies.
  • Experience with TLS certificates, trust stores, keystores, and PKI dependencies, and with APM, logging, and observability tools.
  • Experience supporting production outages, incident bridges, and root-cause analysis using ServiceNow or a comparable ITSM platform.
  • Familiarity with PowerShell, Python, SQL, or Bash, and with DISA STIGs and DoD RMF, ATO, IAVA, and POA&M requirements.

Certifications

  • Required: None.
  • Preferred: Database, cloud, middleware, application-server, or ITIL certifications.

Security Clearance

  • Active Secret clearance or higher is required.

Other (Travel, Work Environment, DoD 8570 Requirements, Administrative Notes, etc.)

Work Environment / Travel

  • Remote position; Chicago, IL–area candidates preferred.
  • After-hours work may be required during outages, deployments, maintenance windows, upgrades, and recovery activities.
