About the role

About Kastle

Kastle is building the AI employee for banks. Our AI agents help financial institutions originate loans, process payments, and support customers through some of their most important financial decisions. We’ve processed more than $2 billion in transactions and raised a $24M Series A, with backing from Insight Partners and Y Combinator.

We’re building AI for environments where accuracy, reliability, and compliance matter every day.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Compliance Counsel to help build the regulatory foundation behind Kastle’s AI agents.

You’ll work directly with our founders, product and engineering teams, and customers to translate financial services regulations into practical product requirements, compliance tests, and operating controls. You’ll also handle commercial contract reviews and help customers understand how our agents fit into their compliance programs.

This is a hands-on individual contributor role with broad ownership. You should be as comfortable writing a test case for a borrower interaction as you are redlining a customer agreement or discussing a regulatory question with a bank’s compliance team.

What You’ll Do

  • Build our AI compliance program. Establish the policies, controls, review processes, and documentation that support responsible deployment of AI agents across consumer lending, commercial lending, and banking workflows.
  • Turn regulations into test cases. Work with product and engineering to define compliant agent behavior, build realistic testing scenarios, set clear pass/fail criteria, and investigate failures before and after deployment.
  • Own our compliance library. Maintain a current, usable source of regulatory requirements and interpretations. Track changes in laws, rules, and regulatory guidance, and turn them into updates to our products, tests, and customer guidance.
  • Advise product development. Review agent scripts, disclosures, communication flows, and new capabilities. Identify risks early and help the team find practical ways to ship.
  • Work directly with customers. Partner with bank and lender legal and compliance teams on deployment reviews, control requirements, and ongoing compliance questions.
  • Review and negotiate contracts. Draft and redline customer and vendor agreements, including confidentiality, data protection, and compliance provisions. Coordinate specialized matters with outside counsel.
  • Shape our compliance positioning. Help sales and leadership explain our controls accurately in customer conversations, diligence responses, and external materials.

Your work will cover ECOA, FCRA, FDCPA, UDAAP, TCPA, SCRA, RFPA, CAN-SPAM, privacy requirements, BSA/AML, and E-SIGN, along with applicable implementing regulations and state laws.

What We’re Looking For

  • A JD and active membership in good standing with a U.S. state bar, with eligibility to practice as in-house counsel in California.
  • 4+ years of relevant legal or regulatory compliance experience, including hands-on work within a lender, bank, or fintech.
  • Experience partnering with product and engineering teams at a technology company to bring regulated products to market.
  • Strong knowledge of lending and banking compliance, with the judgment to research unfamiliar issues and know when to involve specialist counsel.
  • Experience translating regulatory requirements into policies, controls, monitoring, or compliance testing.
  • Ability to independently review, draft, and negotiate commercial agreements.
  • Clear writing and practical advice. You can explain a complex requirement and tell the team what to do next.
  • High ownership, attention to detail, and comfort working through ambiguity.
  • Based in San Francisco or willing to relocate and work from our office.

Nice to Have

  • Experience spanning both a lending business and a technology company.
  • Familiarity with loan origination, servicing, and collections operations audit requirements.
  • Experience evaluating AI systems, reviewing automated customer interactions, or building compliance monitoring programs.

Why Join Kastle

  • Be a thought leader for how AI gets deployed in one of the most demanding regulated industries.
  • Work directly with founders and influence product decisions from the start.
  • Build systems that impact the lives of millions of consumers through major banks and lenders.
  • Work with some of the most talented people on the planet.

Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) plan, health and wellness membership support, company meals, and team offsites. At Kastle, we’re building at the edge of AI - fast, focused, and with real ownership. Sprints and major launches move quickly, and we look for people who are energized by that pace. Our team typically works around 60 hours per week, beginning at 8:00 AM, with five days spent collaborating in person at our San Francisco office
