The Service

The Joyce Palmer Health Service is an 11-bed primary-level acute facility located on the Aboriginal community of Palm Island. The facility is named after Joyce Palmer, a well-known Palm Island health worker. Joyce Palmer provided care to the people of Palm Island for more than 40 years until her retirement in 1984.

Joyce Palmer Health Service has doctors who work full time and are on call for emergencies after hours. The hospital cares for all non-critically ill patients, including antenates, neonates, children, adults and aged care. Critical patients are stabilised and transferred to Townsville University Hospital by Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS) Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) with a retrieval team.

Palm Island offers a unique tropical lifestyle in a welcoming and growing community. Enjoy a short commute, beautiful nearby beaches, excellent fishing, and lush rainforest surrounds.
