About us

The Older Persons Mental Health Service (OPMHS) is part of the Cairns and Hinterland Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drugs Services (MHAODS), providing specialist mental health care and support to older people across the Cairns and Hinterland region. Our multidisciplinary team delivers domiciliary psychiatric consultation and liaison services in partnership with General Practitioners through a shared-care model.

Committed to improving the social, emotional and physical wellbeing of our community, we provide holistic, evidence-based care and limited outreach services to surrounding areas including Tully, Herberton and Mossman. Through collaboration, innovation and person-centred practice, we strive to deliver equitable, integrated and sustainable mental health services for older people.

About you

In your new role you will...

  • Lead and support the team in partnership with the Nurse Grade 7, coordinating day-to-day operations including shift coordination, workforce planning and rostering, performance management, change initiatives, and fostering a positive workplace culture.
  • Demonstrate advanced clinical assessment, decision-making and problem-solving skills, with expert ability to plan, coordinate and manage clinical care, apply contemporary nursing practices, and work autonomously within a complex healthcare environment.
  • Provide support, guidance, mentoring, preceptorship, role modelling and promote cooperation and collaborative teamwork.
  • Engage in incident reporting and investigation and conduct and apply quality improvement frameworks and audits and develop risk minimisation strategies/activities to promote safe and/or rectify unsafe practice.
