About the role

Fixed Term Temporary full-time, up to 3 years

Why you'll be excited about this role

You'll lead one of North Queensland's most important cardiology services from a tertiary referral centre that delivers the full spectrum of adult cardiac care, including cardiac catheterisation, cardiac investigations, inpatient cardiology, coronary care, heart failure services and regional outreach clinics. Townsville University Hospital is Northern Queensland's designated Trauma Centre and spans more than 41 clinical specialties, giving you the opportunity to shape cardiology services within one of Australia's most complex regional health services.

This is a role where your influence extends well beyond a department. You'll lead service development, mentor future specialists, contribute to research and education, and help shape models of care across a region that stretches from Townsville to rural and remote communities. Through THHS's long-standing partnership with James Cook University, there are opportunities to contribute to teaching, research and workforce development while building the future of cardiology in North Queensland.

Why you'll love working at THHS

You'll work alongside a close-knit leadership team that stays connected to the frontline. Leaders who join THHS often value the direct access to clinicians, operational teams and decision-makers, and the ability to see the impact of their decisions quickly. The difference you make is visible, whether that's improving care pathways in Townsville or strengthening services for patients living in remote communities across the region.

Outside work, life moves at a different pace. Townsville offers affordable living, strong schools, sunshine most of the year and easy access to places like Magnetic Island and the wider North Queensland region.

Salary and benefits

  • $8,511.50 - $10,791.60 per fortnight (L18-L27)
  • 4 to 6 weeks annual leave with 14%-17.5% loading
  • 12.75% employer contribution to superannuation
  • Plus Salary Sacrificing options may be available

What you'll be working on

  • Leading the Cardiology Department and driving service development across hospital, community and outreach settings.
  • Delivering safe, high-quality, evidence-based cardiology services across North Queensland.
  • Supporting and developing Cardiology Registrars, junior medical officers and multidisciplinary team members.
  • Leading research, education and training activities that strengthen specialist cardiology services.
  • Providing clinical governance, workforce leadership and strategic direction for a tertiary referral cardiac service.

Who will do well here

You'll enjoy building services and leading change in a complex health environment. You're motivated by improving patient outcomes across both tertiary and regional settings and can balance strategic leadership with clinical excellence.

You'll value developing future specialists and creating opportunities for junior medical officers, registrars and multidisciplinary teams to thrive.

Key requirements:

  • MBBS or equivalent qualification.
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (or equivalent qualification).
  • Participation in the on-call roster.
  • Current Queensland C Class Driver Licence.
  • Sub-specialty cardiology training and leadership experience will be highly regarded.
