Position: Full-Time | Experienced Heating Professional

About the Position

We specialize in steam and hot water heating systems, providing expert diagnostics, repairs, maintenance, and installations for residential and light commercial customers.

We're looking for an experienced heating professional who understands boilers, enjoys solving challenging mechanical problems, and takes genuine pride in their craftsmanship.

This position is primarily focused on steam and hydronic heating. We're particularly interested in someone with a strong plumbing background who understands piping, mechanical systems, and the fundamentals of heat distribution.

Primary Responsibilities

Boiler Service, Diagnostics & Repair

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair residential and light commercial steam and hot water heating systems.
  • Service natural gas and oil-fired boilers, depending on experience.
  • Diagnose and repair burners, ignition systems, gas valves, circulators, zone valves, aquastats, pressure controls, and safety devices.
  • Troubleshoot steam heating problems, including water hammer, uneven heating, venting deficiencies, and condensate return issues.
  • Diagnose hydronic heating problems involving circulation, air elimination, expansion tanks, zoning, and system pressure.
  • Perform seasonal maintenance, safety inspections, combustion analysis, and efficiency evaluations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve system performance, reliability, and longevity.

Heating System Installation & Replacement

  • Install and replace residential and light commercial steam and hot water boilers.
  • Perform near-boiler piping, hydronic distribution piping, venting, and control installations.
  • Evaluate existing heating systems and assist in developing appropriate repair and replacement solutions.
  • Work with a variety of traditional and modern boiler technologies.
  • Ensure installations meet manufacturer specifications, applicable codes, and established quality standards.

Additional Mechanical Work

While steam and hot water heating will be the primary focus, there may be opportunities to assist with related plumbing and mechanical work, depending on experience, interests, and seasonal demand.

Experience with forced-air heating systems is also welcome, although it is not a requirement for this position..

  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills and an understanding of piping and heat distribution.
  • Ability to diagnose electrical and mechanical components associated with boiler operation.
  • Familiarity with heating system safety controls and proper service procedures.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with residential and commercial customers.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and continuing professional development.

Preferred

  • Maryland plumbing license or equivalent relevant trade experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of one-pipe and two-pipe steam heating systems.
  • Experience with Burnham, Weil-McLain, Peerless, Crown, Utica, and other major boiler manufacturers.
  • Experience with light commercial boiler rooms and multi-zone heating systems.
  • Knowledge of combustion analysis, burner adjustments, and hydronic system balancing.
  • Familiarity with modern high-efficiency condensing boilers and associated controls.
  • Experience with oil-fired heating equipment.
  • Experience with forced-air heating equipment.
  • Familiarity with ServiceTitan or similar field service software.

The Professional We're Looking For

We believe the best heating technicians combine technical knowledge, curiosity, craftsmanship, and sound judgment.

Our ideal candidate:

  • Understands heating systems. You look beyond individual components to understand how the entire system operates.
  • Enjoys troubleshooting. You take satisfaction in identifying the actual cause of a problem rather than simply replacing parts.
  • Respects the craft. You understand the importance of proper piping, careful installation, and attention to detail.
  • Treats customers well. You explain problems clearly, offer appropriate solutions, and protect the homes and businesses entrusted to you.
  • Works collaboratively. You appreciate having experienced plumbing and electrical professionals available when a problem crosses trade boundaries.
  • Continues learning. You recognize the value of both traditional heating knowledge and emerging technologies.
  • Recognizes opportunities. You can identify necessary repairs, recommend improvements, and help customers make informed decisions without relying on high-pressure sales techniques.

Why Specialize in Steam & Hydronic Heating?

Steam and hydronic heating are specialized trades that require experience, patience, and a genuine understanding of mechanical systems.

Many older heating systems remain in service throughout Baltimore and its surrounding communities. Maintaining these systems properly requires professionals who understand how they were designed, how they operate, and how to improve their performance.

At the same time, modern high-efficiency boilers and sophisticated heating controls offer new opportunities for technicians who want to expand their expertise.

This position brings these worlds together.

You'll work on everything from traditional residential steam systems to modern hydronic installations and light commercial heating equipment.

You'll also have the professional support, resources, and opportunities needed to build a lasting career.

We're not simply looking for someone who can fix a boiler. We're looking for someone who wants to be recognized as an expert in heating
