Do you enjoy working outdoors, supporting others and making a real difference in the community? Join the National Fire Ant Eradication Program and help protect Queensland from one of Australia's most significant biosecurity threats.

As an Assistant Team Leader, you'll support the day-to-day leadership of a field-based team delivering surveillance, treatment and sampling activities across South East Queensland. Working alongside your Team Leader, you'll provide on-the-ground guidance, contribute to operational planning and help create a safe, engaged and high-performing team environment.

This is a great opportunity for experienced operators, supervisors or aspiring leaders looking to further develop their leadership capability within a large government program.

What you'll do

  • Support the leadership and coordination of a field team delivering surveillance, treatment and biosecurity activities.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance, coaching and support to team members.
  • Assist with work allocation, rostering, quality assurance and operational reporting.
  • Lead field activities and provide direction on-site to ensure work is completed safely and effectively.
  • Use GPS devices, tablets and other technology to record operational data and monitor progress.
  • Engage professionally with landholders, stakeholders and community members.
  • Promote safe work practices and contribute to a positive team culture.
  • Participate in field operations including surveillance, mapping, trapping, sampling and treatment activities.

We're looking for people who

  • Experience supporting or coordinating teams.
  • Have experience coordinating, leading or mentoring others in an operational environment.
  • Communicate effectively and build positive working relationships.
  • Enjoy supporting and developing team members.
  • Can make sound decisions and solve problems in the field.
  • Are organised, adaptable and capable of working independently.
  • Have sound computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, teamwork and quality outcomes.

This role is suited to people who

  • Enjoy working outdoors and leading by example.
  • Are ready to take the next step in their leadership career.
  • Thrive in hands-on, team-based environments.
  • Take pride in supporting others and delivering results.

Physical requirements

This is an active, field-based role. You will be required to:

  • Walk up to approximately 10-15 kilometres per day.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Lift and carry equipment weighing up to 15kg.
  • Perform manual handling activities including bending, reaching, squatting and kneeling.
  • Use hand-operated equipment and approved ant bait products.

Why join us?

  • Make a genuine difference protecting Queensland's environment, agriculture and communities.
  • Develop your leadership capability within a large government program.
  • Enjoy a 9-day fortnight and opportunities for overtime.
  • Receive comprehensive training and development.
  • Work with a supportive and motivated team.
