About the Department of Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology is dedicated to exploring the human experience across time and space. We passionately foster learning in anthropology, engage in fundamental and transformative research, and serve our community in confronting the problems faced by humankind and the planet. In doing so, we are building a new anthropology, one that bridges the subdisciplines within the field, connects anthropology to other disciplines, accelerates basic science toward transformative application, and integrates academic and non-academic worlds.

At the heart of our department is a commitment to answering fundamental questions about what it means to be human. We explore how humans have evolved and adapted over time, how cultures and social relationships shape our lives, how people interact with their environments, and how communities respond to change and plan for the future. By examining the diversity of human experiences across cultures and through time, we help students develop a deeper understanding of the world and their place within it.

Our department offers engaging undergraduate and graduate degree programs, along with professionally oriented programs in cultural resource management (CRM), user experience research (UX), and data analytics. Through the study of anthropology, students gain the perspective, practical skills, and curiosity to navigate an increasingly interconnected world and make meaningful contributions to their communities and professions, carrying forward our vision of an anthropology that bridges worlds.
