About the role

Our client based in Powys is seeking an experienced Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) to join their dedicated AMHP Team. This is an excellent opportunity for a highly skilled practitioner to work within a specialist mental health service, undertaking statutory duties under the Mental Health Act and delivering high-quality interventions to adults experiencing complex mental health needs.

The successful candidate will play a key role in safeguarding vulnerable adults, undertaking Mental Health Act assessments, managing risk, and coordinating interventions to ensure individuals receive appropriate support and treatment. Working within a multi-disciplinary environment, you will collaborate closely with health professionals, community mental health services, police, housing providers, families, and carers, whilst promoting recovery, independence, and person-centred practice in line with the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014.

Key Responsibilities

Core duties include:

  • Undertaking statutory Approved Mental Health Professional duties under the Mental Health Act 1983, including Mental Health Act assessments and applications where appropriate.
  • Completing comprehensive mental health, social care, and risk assessments to inform decision-making and support planning.
  • Managing a complex caseload involving adults experiencing severe and enduring mental health difficulties, safeguarding concerns, and high-risk situations.
  • Applying the principles of the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014 to promote wellbeing, independence, and strengths-based practice.
  • Working collaboratively with Community Mental Health Teams, health professionals, police, housing services, families, carers, and other partner agencies.
  • Coordinating and facilitating Mental Health Act assessments, ensuring legal compliance and robust decision-making.
  • Undertaking safeguarding enquiries and responding to concerns relating to abuse, neglect, self-neglect, exploitation, and risk.
  • Completing Mental Capacity Assessments and contributing to Best Interest decision-making where required.
  • Preparing professional reports, court documentation, and legal statements to a high standard.
  • Participating in duty systems, emergency responses, and out-of-hours mental health assessments where required.
  • Promoting recovery-focused and person-centred practice, ensuring individuals and carers are fully involved in assessment and support planning processes.
  • Maintaining accurate, timely, and legally compliant case records, assessments, and reports.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Professional Qualification: Degree in Social Work, Diploma in Social Work, CQSW, or equivalent recognised Social Work qualification.
  • Registration: Must be registered with Social Care Wales.
  • AMHP Qualification: Must hold a current Approved Mental Health Professional qualification and warrant.
  • Experience: Significant post-qualified experience within Adult Social Care and Mental Health Services.
  • Legislation Knowledge: Strong knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983, Mental Capacity Act 2005, Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014, Human Rights Act, and Adult Safeguarding legislation.
  • Mental Health Experience: Proven experience working with individuals experiencing complex mental health needs and managing high-risk situations.
  • Assessment Skills: Ability to complete robust assessments, formulate risk management plans, and make defensible decisions within legal frameworks.
  • Multi-Agency Working: Experience working effectively with NHS services, police, housing providers, and other statutory and voluntary sector partners.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent report-writing, negotiation, assessment, and communication skills, with the ability to operate confidently in challenging situations.
  • Driving Licence: Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle is essential due to the community-based nature of the role.
