About the role

New York City · Full-time

Build AI that helps people get care.

At Nolla Health, we’re building AI-powered healthcare that connects understanding a patient’s needs with actually delivering care. We’re looking for an engineer who can turn advances in AI into useful experiences for patients and clinicians.

You’ll build agents and the product experiences around them: how they gather context, use tools, communicate with patients, and work with clinicians. You should enjoy working across models, backend services, and interfaces to make an entire workflow work well.

This is a hands-on product engineering role. You’ll work closely with clinical teammates to understand what good care requires, then build, evaluate, and improve the software that supports it.

What you'll do

  • Build AI-powered features for patients and clinicians, from an early prototype through production.
  • Develop agent workflows that gather information, use tools, maintain context, and move tasks forward.
  • Build the backend logic and user interfaces needed to deliver complete product experiences.
  • Work with clinicians to define appropriate agent behavior, limits, and handoffs.
  • Compare models and approaches, and improve prompts, tool definitions, retrieval, and orchestration based on evidence.
  • Work with our evals engineer to test changes against realistic cases, investigate failures, and prevent regressions.
  • Improve latency, cost, reliability, and observability so features work well in everyday use.
  • Partner with our backend engineer to connect agents to secure services and healthcare integrations.

What you bring

  • A strong software engineering foundation and experience shipping products people use.
  • Hands-on experience building LLM-powered applications or agents beyond a demo, including tool use and multi-step workflows.
  • The ability to work across backend services and user interfaces, and take a feature from idea to launch.
  • Good judgment about when to use a model, when to write conventional software, and how to combine them.
  • An empirical approach: you inspect outputs, build tests, study failures, and measure whether a change helps.
  • Careful thinking about uncertainty, sensitive information, and when a workflow needs human input.
  • Comfort working with ambiguous requirements and getting feedback directly from users and clinical teammates.
  • Effective use of AI coding tools, with responsibility for the quality of the software you ship.

We care about what you’ve built and how you approach problems. Experience at a small startup, independent projects, and substantive open-source work can all demonstrate the ownership we’re looking for.

Bonus points

  • Patient-facing or clinician-facing software.
  • Conversational or voice agents, retrieval systems, or workflows that use multiple tools.
  • Production model evaluation, monitoring, and failure analysis.
  • Designing interfaces that make complex tasks easier to complete.

Healthcare experience is welcome, but it isn’t required. You should be interested in learning the domain and building carefully with clinical partners.

You’ll help shape how patients and clinicians experience AI in healthcare. The work spans technical decisions and product decisions: what an agent should do, how people interact with it, and how we know it’s helping.

You’ll have room to experiment, ship, and own meaningful parts of the product on a small team.

This role is based in New York City. We’re open to candidates willing to relocate.
